LETTER ON FRALEY CEMETERIES - Dungannon #73,74 & 75

Letter dated May 4, 1985

By JAMES M. VICARS

"I am a native of Scott County and have been researching the FRALEY & VICARS families for several years.

"My family lived on Valley Creek near Culbertson Chapel. WILLIAM R. FRALEY came to Valley Creek from Russell County circa 1850. On August 28 1850, he purchased 400 acres of land from WILLIAM & MARY DINGUS. His neighbors were CHARLES CULBERT- SON (Culbertson Chapel was part of this farm) , NATHAN DAUGHERTY, HENRY McCONNELL and GEORGE McCONNELL.

"If you look at your South Dungannon map and locate the McConnell Cemetery #57, Meade Cemetery #58, and the Culbertson Cemetery #59, you are very close to two cemeteries on what was the Fraley Farm.

"The first cemetery is about a half to three-quarters of a mile south of the McConnell Cemetery. As you go down Valley Creek toward Fort Blackmore or Gate City, you can locate this cemetery on the ridge to your left and above the old

C. C. FRALEY house. This is the CHRISTOPHER C. FRALEY CEMETERY (Dungannon #74)

"On the same side of the road and creek, about one-fourth mile from C.C. FRALEY CEMETERY near the old NELSE MOORE house, is the MOORE CEMETERY (Dungannon #73) . NELSON MOORE married HELEN C. FRALEY, daughter of WILLIAM R. FRALEY and CAROLINE E. CLAY FRALEY and, of course, a sister of C.C. FRALEY.

"There is another cemetery on the original property of WILLIAM R. FRALEY. It is on the hill, opposite the FRALEY & MOORE CEMETERIES. This is the M.B. FRALEY CEMETERY (Dungannon #75) M. B. FRALEY was the son of WILLIAM R. and a younger brother of C.C. FRALEY.

"Although the Civil War marker for Grandpa Fraley's (C.C. FRALEY) grave does not show the birth and death dates, I know them (B. March 20, 1844 - D. June 1 1921) ."

Sincerely,

JAMES M. VICARS

By EULA MAE MCNUTT, and dau EVA & WANDA . It is now cleaned and we copied all we found with all the names there was. There are many with old rocks. Some sunken with nothing. Stones lying on the ground, and some were broken. Some with foot markers and head stones completely gone from the cemetery. I found half of one against a fence and put it on the grave where it belongs after holding it together to be sure it belonged there and copied it.

THE CIVIL WAR MARAUDERS

[ This is an article written by OMER ADDINGTON (noted historian) which was published in the HERALD VIRGINIA GATE CITY, July 18 1984. There is a large picture of OMER ADDINGTON standing in the OSBORN/REDWINE CEMETERY (Hilton #9) ]

By OMER C. ADDINGTON

The American Civil War had dragged on for three years and the tide had begun to turn against the South. They had lost the battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863) . One day later they lost the battle of Vicksburg which had been under siege from May 17 to July 4 1863. The fall of Vicksburg deprived the Confederacy of the use of the Mississippi River. The trans-Mississippi Department had come to be the principal sources from which horses, cattle, swine, and other supplies were obtained for the Southern armies. On July 9, 1863, the South lost the Port of Hudson Louisianna: from this date communication between the states east and west of the Mississippi River were cut.
