Report of Building Committee

To the Voters and Taxpayers of Pittsford:

The committee elected at the annual town meeting in March, 1911, to secure land and erect thereon an eight-room brick school building, herewith make their final report. They completed the Lathrop school building and turned the same over to the school directors about August 1st, 1912.

In addition to the building the committee expended over a thousand dollars for school furnishings, mainly desks, blackboards and curtains. The committee were not specifically empowered to do this and may have exceeded their authority. The furniture however was an absolute necessity before the building could be used and as the school directors had no funds available it seemed best for this committee to make the purchases which were made with the advice of the school directors and superintendent.

It was expected, when this building was authorized, that the expense would not exceed the amount of the Lothrop fund, and it would have been possible to keep the cost within that amount. The committee however were of the opinion that as so large an amount was to be expended in any event. it was wise to add perhaps 10 per cent. to the amount and have a building in every respect permanent and satisfactory. For this reason they put on the best slate roof obtainable instead of a flat roof covered with tar and gravel. For this reason the front entrance was put in on the west side though it added only to convenience and appearance and was not absolutely necessary. A cheaper heating and ventilating plant might have been installed and wooden partitions instead of slate might have been used in the toilet rooms. The committee also spent some seventeen hundred dollars more than was originally intended for land. Upon all these points the committee submit their action to the candid judgment of the people of the town.

The financial statement follows :

The largest circula- tion on any one day was on Saturday Mar. 16, when 210 books were drawn. More books were sent out on that date than on any other in the history of the library. The smallest cir- culation was on Friday, Sept. 6, when only 6 books were taken out.

During the past year the library has subscribed to 28 magazines and a daily newspaper for use on the reading- room table and for the magazine club. Nine other period- icals have also been received regularly as gifts.

30

The librarian has received in fines on overdue books, at the rate of 1 cent per day, $30 ... 47; for 25-cent book subscrip- tion taken out by non-residents, $4.25; for seven $1.50 sub- scriptions to the magazine club, $10.50; for the rental of books of fiction at 2 cents per day, $18.93; a total of $64.15.

Between six and seven tons of old newspapers and mag- azines have been brought in, and as soon as the amount can be made up to ten tons, they will be sold for the benefit of the library. The committee in charge ask every one to assist in collecting old paper.

A printed list of books added to the library from Jan. 1st, 1912, to Jan. 1st, 1913, has just been printed and is now ready for free distribution.

The library is open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday afternoons from 2 to 5 o'clock and on Wednesday and Saturday evenings from 6:30 to 9 o'clock.

Respectfully submitted, MARY T. RANDALL, (Acting Librarian) ..
