. WYOMING STATE BUSINESS DIRECTORY

TORRINGTON.

Torrington, the county seat of Goshen county, is located on the Bur- lington railroad and the North Platte river, nine miles west of the Nebraska line and 90 miles northeast of Cheyenne. Its present population is 1,687, and of the vicinity about 3,500. Altitude 3,960 feet. The Union Pacific Railroad is built to within a few miles of this place, and will soon be ex- tended through the Goshen Hole country, thus opening up a vast undevel- oped region of splendid country. The country surrounding Torrington is partly irrigated and part dry farming iand. There is now under irrigation from the Government projects over 125,000 acres of the best irrigated land in America suitable for the raising of alfalfa. sugar beets, potatoes and all kinds of grain. In this vicinity also are over 1,000,000 acres of good dry farming land for all of which Torrington is the trading center. Agriculture is the principal industry and alfalfa, sugar beets, potatoes and all kinds of grain are grown in abundance.

Alfalfa yields from three to five tons per acre under irrigation. Many dry farmers also find alfalfa profitable although the yield is not so heavy. Irrigated wheat yields from 30 to 60 bushels, dry land wheat from 10 to 25 bushels. Oats do equally as well as other small grains. Sugar beets aver- age from 10 to 20 tons per acre, as high as 24 tons per acre being grown. Sugar companies maintain loading dumps at Torrington and Lingle, and a sugar factory is a prospect of the immediate future. Potatoes under irri- gation yield from 200 to 500 bushels per acre.

The highest temperature is rarely 100 degrees in summer and seldom reaches 20 below in winter, making an average temperature of about 60 degrees. Our rainfall is from 16 to 24 inches annually, an average of about 20 inches. On account of cool mornings and evenings and the absence of hot winds, the evaporation is slight and is equal to a much heavier rainfall farther east. The combination of good summer pasture and plenty of win- ter feed make Goshen county unexcelled for cattle raising or dairying. There are more cattle here today than when it was an exclusive cattle country. Alfalfa and corn are the ideal feeds for hogs and we grow them both. Hogs are money makers here, to a greater extent, perhaps, than in the "corn belt" further east. Sheep are also profitable.
