BAPTIST CHURCH OF CARROLLTON, PICKENS COUNTY, ALABAMA
On the 4th Sunday in May, 24th 1846 services were begub by Rev. John T. Muss (Bishop) of Bedford, Tennessee, opening with prayer by Rev. A. H. Furguson of Fairfield District, South Carolina. Brothe Matthew Lyon, acting Clerk, read letters of Deacon Francis W. Bostick and his wife, Candace M .; Mrs. Mary Caroline Sherrod; Mrs. Rebecca Rocker; Edward Lee; Matthew Lyon and wife - Savannah; Muscoggs Lyon; from the big Creek Baptist Church near Carrollton and Mrs. L. Holly of Mississippi.
The first pastor was Rev. William R. Stannsel, father of Col M. L. Stansel, who served to 1848, then the next pastor was Rev. Montgomery C. Curry.
This church was made a member of the Union (now Pickensville) Baptist Association and still was. in 1246.
Services were held first in the Courthouse, then November 21, 1846 in the Male Academy; next on the Methodist church to October 1855 - when they were in the homes of the members to June 13, 1859 when services were held in the Franklin Academy. On Saturday before the second Sunday in August 1857 the church met in Conference in the new church building which was replaced later by the present building.
The Rev. William R. Stansel came to Pickens County in 1831 from Georgia and was the regular pastor for many years.
In early days, there was strict discipline in the church. several members were expelled for intoxication and other offenses, even an ordained preacher member was expelled for being drunk. Several slaves were members of this church.

A Sunday School was begun before 1857. Brother W. G. Robertson was a leader in the Sunday School for many years. His wife was the first president of the Women's Missionary Union, About 1898 only two preachers were ordained there - Matthew Lyons and R. M. Humphries, Matthew Lyon was first a printer, then editor of the "Register", next a lawyer and Registrar in Chancery, afterwards a 'cleryman and later a teacher. Grandchildren of Edward Lee: Carson, Ada Lucy, Lofton and Emmett Lee, Mrs. Alama Carson, Mrs. Monroe Dowden, Mrs Bessie Smith were members.
Hon. J. J. Willcutt of Anniston, Alabama, Mrs. Bessie Elmore of Demoplis, Mrs. Bessie Mae Barder and Mrs. Julia Hill Clark were members and descendants of F. W. Bostick.
Edgar L. Smith, born December 19, 1868 and who died in Carrollton May 4, 1935 was very liberal to the church and will a large sum to this church and to Baptist work.
James F. Hidge, born September 30, 1866, died September 8, 1927 was Circuit Clerk of the county and of the Baptist Association for several years. His daughter, Mamie was pianist of this church.
Milton Benjamin Curry was baptized in the Anon Church (now Alice- ville) in 1880, made member of the Carrollton Church in 1886, was for 35 years Moderator of the Pickins Baptist Association. Rev. John H. Curry, born January 7, 1845 in Pickens County, died at Northport, Ala,, Sept. 9, 1901. He was prdained by the Big Creek Baptist Church in 1868; preached at Obion County, Tenn., in Pickens and Tuscaloosa County. Was Ist Serg, in C.S.A.

W. G. Robertson was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama September 25, 1839, died in Carrollton, Alabama March 13, 1932. He married Sarah A. Gardner. He was 2nd Lieut, in Company E 18th Alabama Infantry Regiment, C. S. A. and was captured at Missionary Ridge and was a prisoner of War, to end of that war. He moved to Carrolton in 1886 and was a deacon in this Baptist Church from 1872 until he died. Only one child, Mrs. Eliza Nettles survived him.
Miss Addie Cox was born in Pickens County 1895, joined the Baptist church in Carrollton in 1889. In 1918 she applied to the Southern Baptist Convention as a missionary and was
in China 1918-1925. And from 1926-1934, she worked until the outbreak of the Communist and in 1927 had to leave the interior of China with ten other missionaries. 1935-1944
war, flood, famine and bombings, etc, but she continued her work until she was compelled to leave. Her trip home took seven months. Addie Cox was named "The Heroine of the Faith."

"Larkin Cardin came from North Carolina to this county in 1809. He was born October 3, 1785 and died November 1, 1863. His wife, Rosannah was born April 20, 1792
a and died Fenruary 17, 1843, Their markers are in an abandoned cemetery, on a farm belonging to George L.

ANCESTORS OF THE CURETONS OF PICKENS COUNTY, ALABAMA
The Cureton family came from Wales about 1760, settled first near Lancaster, Penn., then southward to the vicinity of Petersbur/, Virginia and on to South Carolina as recorded by Capt. T. J. Cureton of Winnsboro, Faiirfield County, South Carolina in 1904, being facts that he obtained from his uncle, Thomas Cureton who died in the Waxhaw settlement of South Carolina in 1857.
This Thomas was the last surviving child of the James Cureton, original settler there in 1788.
A William Cureton lived in Westover, Prince George County, Va., where he bought land in 1715 in Wyanoke Parish. William was a surveyor and roved all over Virginia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. He suveyed the Virginia, North Carolina line,
James Cureton was born in Virginia 1709, married 17 ?? to Elizabeth (Betsy) Heath. She was the daughter of William Heath. He died in 1800 and she died in 1809. Their children:

WILL OF DABNEY DUNCAN
STATE OF ALABAMA) ) PICKENS COUNTY ) In the name of God, Amen! I, Dabney Duncan being of sound mind and disposing memory do make, declare and pub- lish this my last will and testament hereby revoking all wills by me at anytime hereto fore made.
Item 1. After the payment of my funeral expenses and my just debts, I depose of my property as follows: To my beloved wife, Delilah ( Palmer) during her lifetime or wodowhood, I devise and bequeath my homestead and eighty (80) acres of land adjoining that is my resid- ence and eighty (80) acres of land and such portion of mu household and kitchen furniture', farming implements, cows and calves and hogs as with her seperate property may be necessary and sufficient for the comfort and support of the family, to be set apart by three (3) dis- interested persons selected by my exexcutor: Also my buggy and harn- ess and two such mules as she may select out of my stock ard pro- visions and corn and fodder sufficient for one year after my death. Item 2. All of the balance of the property I may own at the time of my death of every kind and description I bequeath and devise to our infant daughter, Mary Jane and any other child or children, I and my saif wife may have born to us here after in equal share including the reversion and remainder in the property given to my said wife during her lifetime or widowhood.
Item 3. If the child or children provided for in the last item should die leaving no issue of their body or bodies lawfully begotten, the then in that event, I bequeath and devise all my said properties ¿ to to my son, John A. F. Duncan or to his children, if he be dead and the other half to my daughter, Mary J. Cockrell and Frances Gore in equal share to their children.
Item 4. My farm is to be carried on as usual under the direction and control of my executor and I give to him an enlarged power and discretion to buy any stock, mules, horses and etc. necessary thereto and to sell any surplus of stock, crops, supplies etc. and the proceeds of the same so far as may be necessary to apply to the support and education of our said child or children to the extent that the provision made for the Mother and child may be inadequate.
Item 5. All surplus money at anytime on hand to be invested as my executor may deem best as securely loaned at interesr for the benefit of my child or children mentioned in Item #2 for final distribution as above provided for.
Item 6. I hereby nominate and appoint my friend M. L. Stansel of Carrollton, Alabama to be executor of this my last will and testatemnt. Witness my hand 27 day of May 1872.

This Indenture made the 5th day of November, 1908 retur: Mold John Duren", planter, of the State of South Carolina, Kershaw Sistrict -
of the one part and Isaac Knox, planter, of the State and District aforesaid, witnesseth that the said John Duren, for and in con- sideration of Three Hundred Dollars, to him in hand paid, the Receipt where of is hereby acknowledged, hath bargained, sold and aliented, confirmed, and by this-bargain, sells and confirms unto the said Issac Knox, a plantation or tract of land containing three hundred and thirty-five acres, more or less, situted and being on the Northwest side of Little Flat Rock Creek, on both sides of the Jontiel Branch, beginning at a pine on the Northsie of Little Flat Rock Creek, N 52 pls, to a black oak 3 10, lu.M., then south 22 and west 13.50 to white oak, then up Jonntiel Brancj to a white oak, 3 u m, thence South to the South west side of Little Flat Rock Creek to the first mentioned pine; the same being part of the two tracts o of land formerly granted to Benjamin Coward; and the said John Duren to have and hold, thesame 335 acres, more or less unto the said Isaac Knox, his heirs and assigns forever and I, the said John Duren do, for myself and my heirs, my administrators, my assigns, forever, warrant and defend the within mentioned 335 acres of land together with all and sinngular, the rights, the heritament and Appurtenances thereunto belonging, or in anyway pertaining to the said Isaac Knox his heirs and Assigns against myself, my heirs, administrators, assigns ! and all other persons whomsoever claiming or to claim, the same, or any part thereto,
