OBITUARY

Died at Reform, Pickens County, Alabama on the morning of the 31 st day of March 1857. after a protracted illness, Mrs. Eliza- beth Gardner, consort of Daniel Gardner, Esq. The subject of this obituary was born the 9th day of March 1792 in Fairfiled District South Carolina and removed to this county in 1832, where she has since resided, She has been a member of the Baptist Church for the last 26 years and had the privilege of seeing all her children become members, with the exception of one, who died when a youth. In the death of Mrs. Gardner, her husband has been deprived of a kind and affectinate wife, her children of a fond and devoted parent; her servants of a good mistress and Society of a useful member. She expressed to the writer of this-who was frequently with her during her last illness-her willingness to died and preferred death to recovery. Thus when her work was done and as with humblw submission to the will of the Lord - she was preparing to move from her earthlly residence to another spherep the message came from Heaven saying "Come up higher." The church on earth has lost a praying member, but the Church Triunphant has received a new leaf and a new voice in singing the praises of the Lord."

This was copies from a clipping in the Bible of Mrs. Luenia Puckett, Carrollton, Alabama by Mrs. Lillie S. Borden, 1958. Also from Mrs. Puckett's Bible:

THE DUNCAN HOTEL

The Duncan Hotel is said to have been built by Jim Rozell in 1870-80 and one of the last historic land marks of early Reform. It had 20 large rooms and wide verandas and was owned and operated by Thomas Jefferson and Eliza Duncan for more than 50 years.

T. J. DDuncan owned the three main hotels in the county, the other at Aliceville and Carrollton, at the same time and never let the arrival of guests interfere with his checker game. He would point to the register, with "Sign your name here- go upstairs and pick you a room." One with no baggage - a dollar in advance. If he found someone to play checkers with him all night, he wa ready to announce breakfasr with- "Come and get it." When the railroads brough more guests, and if they had to sleep on the floor, he still charged the regular rate $1.00 per night.

One of the present owners, Mrs. F. L. Orr says people still come asking for the good food Mrs. Duncan served. Mayor W. E. Farris and F. L. Orr, the present ownerpinow, only offer room service.

FOX HUNTING COUNTRY

Palmetto, eight miles north of R form, Alabama is one of the best fox hunting spots. Its hardly more that a wide spot on the road on Highway #17. There used to be a Post Office there until John H. Blankhead ran for the U. S. Senate and promised the voters they would have mail service right to their front door.

Palmetto has 150 inhabitants and almost as many dogs, but not many more people than when it was first settled in 1819. Mr. and Mrs. William Wilson were the first settlers there. Their son, Dr. B. F. Wilson was a member of the Alabama Senate in 1857. The Basel Story family and Dr. Sam Hill, were two of the early arrivals in 1820. Rollin Richardson's father gave the town its name - from where he came - "Palmetto, South Carolina." Old TRinty Methodist Church is where the old time camp meetings are still carried on. Mt. Tabor Baptist is the other church. Palmetto was an educational center long before the War Bewtween / »

the States. The school that stood on Academy Hill was operated

for several years after that war. Today the Palmetto High School

is rated as one of the best in Pickens County. Near the school on a cold night the wail of the fox hounds may sound echoing thru the pine thickets just back of the school. The Palmetto Men's Club is planning to incoporate the town, but the residents still live an unhurried life - saying - "We live longer, that way."
