INDEX TO THE ADVERTISING DEPARTMENT.
Public attention is solicited to the ADDVERTISING DEPARTMENT, which has been arranged with much care, displaying at a glance the good taste of the printers, and impressing upon the stranger and townsman the enterprise and energy of the business men of the city. To the Directory itself it adds an air of business, and gives it a better character as a book of reference. By turning to the columns following, the notices of those who have adopted this course to give publicity to their business, may be easily found. This department will be of especial value. to merchants from the country, who may wish to purchase goods.
The business of San Francisco is rapidly imcreasing, and the causes are varied which operate so favorably upon it. The rapid increase of the population, and the arrival by every steamer of families, who intend to make this their future home, give an air of stability and permanency to the city, and create a larger demand for the luxuries as well as necessaries of life, for home consumption, in addition to the already immense, yet constantly increasing, in- land trade, so well facilitated by our matchless harbor and its tributary bays and rivers. Yet it must be evident to every one, that the immense business now carried on in San Francisco is, comparatively, small to what it will be when the great international improve- ments now in agitation shall have been completed.
In admiring the operating causes which have led to this happy result, we must not for- get that the PRESS has been a mighty engine in building up the present prosperous state of trade-a press inferior to none iu the United States, and weilding an influence second only to the indomitable energy and perseverance of the business men of San Francisco.
· NOTE .- Advertisement pages from 1 to 8, inclusive, will be found in the front, and the remainder in the last part of the book, with the exception of the colored leaves, which are placed opposite their respective letters in the General Dictionary.
