CONGRESS .- The SENATE is composed of two members elected by the legislature of each State for the term of six years. Of course the number of Senators is now sixty-two. The Vice-President of the United States is President of the Senate. In his absense, a Pres- ident pro tempore is chosen by the Senate.


THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES is composed of Representatives from each State, in the ratio of one to every 93,420 of the population. The present number of members is two hundred and thirty-four ; and there are four delegates, one each from Oregon, Minnesota, Utah and New Mexico, who have a right to speak, but not to vote .- The compensation of the members $8, and that of the Speaker $16 per day during the ses- sion, and $8 for every twenty miles' travel in going and returning.


SUPREME COURT .- Chief Justice, Roger B. Taney, of Maryland, salary $5000 .- Associate Justices, John McLean, Ohio; James M. Wayne. Georgia; Vacancy; John Ca- tron, Tennessee; Peter V. Daniel, Virginia; Samuel Nelson, New York; Robert C. Grier, Pennsylvania; Benjamin R. Curtis, Massachusetts, salary $4,500. This Court is held in Washington, and has but one session annually, commencing on the first Monday in December.


CIRCUIT COURTS .- The United States are divided into NINE judicial circuits, in each of which a Circuit Court is held at least twice a year for each State within the circuit, by a Justice of the Supreme Court, and the district Judge of the State or District in which the Court sits.


DISTRICT COURTS .- The United States are also divided into FORTY-SIX districts, in which District Courts are held by thirty-six District Judges.

The City has been Districted, and the following signals will be observed in striking the City Hall Bell for an Alarm of Fire.


First District, First Ward-Bounded by Clark's Point and Ray on north and east, south by Jackson, west by Montgomery street. Signal, one stroke of Bell.


Second District, Second Ward-Bounded north by the Bay, east by Montgomery, south by Jackson, and west by Larkin street. Signal, two strokes of Bell.


Third District, Third Ward-Bounded north by Jackson, east by Bay, south by Sacramento, and west by Montgomery street. Signal, three strokes of Bell.


Fourth District, Fourth Ward-Bounded north by Jackson, east by Montgomery, west by Larkin, and south by Clay street. Signal, four strokes of Bell. Fifth District, Fifth Ward-Bounded north by Sacramento, east by Bay, south by Market, and west by Montgomery street. Signal, five strokes of Bell.


Sixth District, Sixth Ward-Bounded north by Clay, east by Montgomery, south by Bush, and West by Larkin street. Signal, six strokes of Bell.
