United States Marine Hospital.
Corner of Harrison and Spear Streets, Rincon Point.
Corner Stone laid, April 7, 1852 .- Building completed, Dec. 12, 1853. Commenced under the administration of PRESIDENT FILLMORE. Completed under the administration of PRESIDENT PIERCE.
Commissioners of Public Buildings. RICHARD P. HAMMOND, Collector. SAMUEL J. BRIDGE, Appraiser.
This building is situate on Rincon Point, an elevated piece of ground on the southeastern limit of the city, commanding a fine view of the surrounding country. The building is four stories high, built of brick. It consists of a central portion 414 feet front, and two wings, cach 31 feet front by 96 feet deep, in the form of the Roman letter I. Its capacity is suffi- cient to contain 500 patients, and 700 might be accommodated. There are four piazzas of ornamental iron work on each side-one in front of each story. The building is admirably ventilated and copiously supplied with water from two wells and two cisterns. Two millions of bricks were consumed in the building, and its cost is estimated at $250,000.
AMMI B. YOUNG, Architect. REUBEN CLARK, Superintendant. CHARLES HOMER, Builder. ROBT. McMILLAN, M. D. Phys'n and Sur.
G. VEIGHT, M. D., Apothecary: GEO. W. KIRBY, Steward. MRS. KIRBY, Matron.
NOTE .- This beautiful structure is prominent to all observers, and reflects great credit, both upon the Superintendant and Builder, the latter having used his liberal spirit and desire to give to the city of San Francisco a building not only an ornament, but so constructed for ventilation and convenience for the recovery of the sick within, that it will well compare with any Hospital in the States in this respect, or in symmetry and beauty of appearance.
State Marine Hospital.
STOCKTON STREET, BETWEEN BROADWAY AND VALLEJO STREETS,
The present State Marine Hospital was created by act of Legislature, passed May 19th, 1853, and went into operation from and after the 30th day of June, 1853. It was organ- ized by the appointment of the following named gentlemen as a Board of Trustees for the Institution :
JOHN MIDDLETON, THOS. McCAHILL, JAS. S. GRAHAM, and
CHAS. GALLAGHER,
WM. MCKIBBEN, Esqrs.
Drs. S. B. MILLS and THOS. PAYNE, were appointed Resident Physicians. Drs. T. S. WHITE, WAKE BRIERLY and J. V. DICKINSON, Visiting Physicians. Dr. AUSTIN WING, Apothecary and Clerk. JAMES A. CLAUGHLEY, Steward ; and Mrs. ELIZA ELDRIDGE, Matron.
Some 30 persons are employed in and about the institution as nurses, attendants, &c.
The average number of patients in the Hospital is about 250, a large proportion of whom are of foreign birth. $100,000 were appropriated by the Legislature for its support for the first year of its existence, also power was given the Board of Trustees to contract with the city of San Francisco, for the support of its indigent sick. A contract for the city sick has been made, and the inmates of the Hospital are composed of the indigent sick of the State, and of the city of San Francisco, in about equal proportions.
Previous to the organization of the present Hospital, there were supported by the State three similar institutions, situated respectively in the cities of San Francisco, (the site of the present institution) Sacramento and Stockton. The State Marine Hospital at San Fran- cisco, and the State Insane Asylum at the city of Stockton, are the only institutions for the

support of the indigent sick and insane sustained by the State. The State Marine Hospital is pleasantly located on Stockton street, between Broadway and Vallejo, streets commanding a partial view of the Bay of San Francisco from North Beach. The present Buildings are much better adapted for such an Institution than the ones first selected.
Trustees and Treasurer of State Marine Hospital.
Office : Room in the Old Post Office Building, opposite the Plaza. TRUSTEES :
JOHN MIDDLETON, Esq., President. THOS. McCAHILL, Esq.
CHAS. GALLAGHER, Esq., Vice President
COL. GRAHAM,

TREASURER OF STATE MARINE HOSPITAL. EDWARD M'GOWAN, Esq.

Private Hospitals.
San Francisco Private Hospital.
Battery Street, North of Vallejo Street, Clark's Point; Formerly Fremont Hotel. H. GIBBONS, M. D. W. P. GIBBONS, M. D.

West side of Mason Street, Between Jackson and Pacific. J. S. SHULER, M. D.
THE YERBA BUENA CEMETERY. Located at the Junction of Market and McAllister streets, AND CONTAINING AN AREA OF TEN ACRES.
The first burial in this Cemetery was in the early part of the year 1850. Since that pe- riod, it has been the principal place of interments ; and at the present time numbers near 4,000 graves. Since the establishment of this Cemetery, about 350 interments have been made at the Mission Dolores ; making a total of 4,350, for a term of three years and ten months.
In connection with the above, one important fact must be remembered, and that is, that during the years 1850 and 1851, the greater portion of the deaths that occurred in this city were of those who arrived here sick in vessels from sea. or from different parts of the State, a large proportion of whom were so reduced on their arrival as to be beyond the aid of medical skill.
With these facts before us, recollecting too the difficulty, nay, almost impossibility that then existed in procuring nurses, or suitable quarters for the sick, we think that, in point of health, the city of San Francisco will favorably compare with any city of the Union.
ME For the above information we are indebted to NATHANIEL GRAY, EsQ., under- taker, 192 Sacramento street.
