The Eureka Soap Works also manufacture a carbolic tree wash, adjudged to have no equal in destroying insect pests. Their Bleaching Soap merits special mention. This labor-saving family soap has a state-wide reputation. Less than half the exertion with superior results is the verified claim for this article. It is expressly manufactured and especially adapted for family washing. As an industry of Humboldt county this firm deserves much credit for the enterprise and energy displayed. It merits the undivided patronage of a generous public.
The public will better appreciate the partial report of the Horticultural Committee, regarding the Carbolic Tree Wash :
Mr. President: Your Committee appointed to test the value of the Tree Wash manufactured by the Eureki Soip Works. As an insect exterminator, it possesses great merit. We are well pleased with the result, and cheerfully recommend it to the orchardists of Humboldt county.
Respectfully Submitted,

THE HUMBOLDT SHOE FACTORY
This establishment merits special mention in this work. It is one of the initiatory enterprises of Humboldt in the line of commercial factories, and it will play a very important part in Humboldt's future manufacturing career. The energetic and enterprising manager, Mr. C. R. Johnston, has for several years labored unceasingly to bring this needed industry into existence, Previous to the death of the late James E. Vance, one of the chief promoters of this enterprise, all necessary arrangements had been completed to incorporate. The sad and sudden ending of a life so vigorous and enterprising, was, indeed, almost a death- blow to the project, but Mr. John Vance, with his characteristic public spirit, at once expressed his approval of the laudable undertaking and resumed the march of progress where his nephew, through Providential interposition, had left off. With Mr. Vance at the head of this institution, it may with certainty be classed as a permanent fixture of Humboldt county. It will enable some of our boys and girls to gain employment, preparatory to future usefulness, and the money now sent out of the county for our foot-wear will be retained at home. The enterprise deserves the undivided support of our people. If so supported, it will create an incentive in others to erect manufacturing establishments. These facts are worthy of considerable thought. The stock-holders elected the following officers: John Vance, President; I. R. Brown, Vice-President; S. I. Allard, Secretary; Dan. Murphy, Treasurer; C. R. Johnston, Superintendent. The main office of the Humboldt Shoe Factory is located in Eureka.

WILLIAM CLARK
Among the many important enterprises of our city there are none worthier of special mention than the above subject. The care and neatness exhibited in the display of choice meats of every description in his model market is not surpassed by any similar institution; juicy roasts, tender porter-house stakes, superior pickled and cured beef and pork, have gained for his establishment the best patronage in the city. Mr. Clark is a shrewd and cautious buyer of beef cattle. Before cattle are slaughtered they receive a thorough course of rest and proper food. This is a great factor in the successful production of sweet, juicy and tender beef. Mr. Clark owns and controls a large cattle ranch at Petrolia, which is especially adapted to the raising of choice beef cattle. Years of experience in the line of his business have educated Mr. Clark as to the requirements of the public. His ability in producing better beef at less cost has a county-wide reputation. He is to the manor born, his father, Chas. Clark, being an old pioneer of the county, first settling in Humboldt in the neighborhood of 1854. He inherits his father's characteristics of fair, square and honorable dealing.

MR. WILLIAM CLARK
Is both a wholesale and retail butcher, and dealer in choice meats of every description. His special dispatch wagon calls for orders and again delivers the same without delay. A postal addressed to P. O. Box 200, or telephone No. 48, is immediately attended to as per request. In addition to the above Mr. Clark carries a complete line of choice butter, eggs, leaf lard, poultry and fresh vegetables. The public will find in Mr. Clark a thorough, honorable gentleman, and pleasant to deal with. He certainly merits the liberal pitronige he enjoys.
ERNEST SEVIER
Among the legal fraternity of Humboldt county the subject of this sketch occupies a prominent position as a jurist. Indeed, it would be a difficult matter to meet a more genial, affable and sound legal advisor. He avoids the humiliating process so extensively resorted to by inexperienced counsellors. He pleads his cause upon the broad principle of merit. Scandal and distraction are in Mr. Sevier's estimation unnecessary to solve legal questions. He meets the conflict upon the field of his opponent. The paramount question with Mr. Sevier is, what can the opposition prove? This is the keynote of his success. He faithfully devotes his energies to the surveillance of opposing action affecting his client's interest. In this he displays alertness and acumen, which receives the commendation of his colleagues. His experience and knowledge of legal enactments of State, county and city, peculiarly qualify him to conduct to a successful issue controversies seemingly hopeless to the casual observer. Attorneys in general are represented as without a soul, but we ask for an exception to the rule in this case, and we feel sure that an intelligent jury will bear us out, that Ernest Sevier is a whole-souled man and advocate. He is but in the infancy of merited success. He nevertheless enjoys a liberal and lucrative practice, confidentially faithful, socially popular, very domestic and liberal to a fault. Visitors are ever welcome at Ernest Sevier's office.
W. J. TAGGART & CO.
It is an established fact that W. J. Taggart & Co. conduct the leading and most popular boot and shoe store in Eureka. Although keeping in stock a large and complete assortment of medium goods, these gentlemen make a decided specialty of fine goods, which combine faultless styles, fine finish and perfect workmanship. These goods are either hand or machine sewed, and sold at prices sure to fit the times and the customer's pocket. The most noted manufacturers. of this class of goods are represented in the stock, and the narrowest or fullest foot of either lady or gentleman can here be accommodated to perfection. GIBBARD & LEVER
As enterprising men Messrs. Gibbard & Lever rank among the first in Humboldt. They have discovered by careful experiment that Humboldt county woods are perfectly adapted to the making of all but some of the most expensive lines of furniture, and the product of her furniture factories now finds a market all over the coast. The manufacturing industry of Gibbard & Lever is highly encouraged, and the firm finds a ready home market for the furniture manufactured. In their salesroom one will observe the most elaborate pieces of furniture, abounding in all styles and patterns, and finished according to the latest designs. Among these are bedroom sets, dining room and parlor furniture in new and beautiful designs, and all the very latest novelties in upholstering materials, easy chairs, gents' and ladies' patent rockers, students' easy chairs, lounges, sofas, bed lounges, hat racks, side boards, etc. The house of Gibbard & Lever deserves patronage and success.

Several firms are engaged in the general merchandise business in Ferndale, but in point of magnitude there is but one engrossed in this important avocation in this growing town. Russ, Early & Williams have long ago established the name of leaders in this line. They do an extensive business, and handle every article common to the general merchandise business. They are popular, liberal and enterprising gentlemen, at all times awake to the interests and requirements of their growing city, and men whose presence in any locality is synonymous with its success and prosperity.
THOMAS CUTLER
In giving space to mention those industries which in their particular line are leading and representative institutions of Humboldt county, we must not omit to mention the well known and popular dealer in General Merchandise and Agricultural Implements. This establishment has done and is doing a large and liberal business, and to-day it stands foremost among the houses doing business in the grocery, produce and general commission trade in Humboldt county. Mr. Cutler handles all kinds of provisions, including hams, bacon, lard, dairy produce, fresh orchard productions, fruits of all kinds, canned goods, staple and fancy groceries, condiments, feed, flour and in fact every conceivable article to be found in a first-class grocery establishment, hardware specialties and a large supply of agricultural implements. Mr. Cutler is also Collector of Customs for this port. He is a gentleman of reliability and integrity, and one whose strict business methods have won for him and his house a trade that is truly enviable.
HENRY ROHNER
Henry Rohner, whose history we give in brief, was born in Switzerland, in the year 1829. He was raised on a farm, and at a suitable age learned the printer's trade, and in 1847, at the age of eighteen, he emigrated to the United States, landing at New Orleans, where he followed his trade for two years. In 1849 he went to Louisville, Ky., from whence he went to Sacramento, and in 1851 came to Humboldt county, where he has since resided, making for himself an honorable name and fortune, and rising from obscurity to a position of prominence and trust.
At St. Joseph, Missouri, with four others, they purchased a yoke of oxen, wagon and outfit to journey overland, their route being across the plains, by Fort Hall and Truckee river to Sacramento, arriving on the 18th of September, 1849, just four months from time of starting. He walked the whole distance, except half a day when he was sick, traveling mostly from 2 A. M. until noon. Five men composed the party and owned jointly the team and outfit. At the end of the trip they had left of their store two pounds of bacon, five pounds of flour and a little coffee. Mr. Rohner mined on the Yuba, Feather and Trinity rivers with moderate success. In the fall of 1852 he located a place on Eel river, and operated

in the Trinity-river mining region. He has resided in Humboldt county since, at or near Rohnerville, excepting a few months in Arcata in 1854 and nine months in Eureka in 1855. He also resided at the latter place from October, 1865, to October, 1867. In 1862 he commenced merchandising at Rohnerville, under the firm name of Rohner & Feigenbaum, continuing until 1865. Since then he has followed farming, and merchandising in Eureka, under the firm name of Rohner & Ellery. Mr. Rohner owns about 350 acres of valuable land near Fortuna and in the vicinity of Rohnerville, a village which derives its name from him. He built the first house in Rohnerville used for merchandising; at that time he was Post-master. He married a Miss Bulkeley, an accomplished American girl, whose able council has proven a valuable factor in his success in life. Their union was blessed with four children, Annie, Henry, Lizzie and Frank. Mr. Roliner has not lost any of his early spirit. His description of adventures in early days are very enjoyable, and his ready wit gives zest to pioneer life. He has retired from active commercial pursuits, giving his care entirely to his vast estate. His home and residence is in Fortuna, a charming village for old age to conclude life.

MAJOR ELIAS H HOWARD
Major Howard was born near Poughkeepsie, New York, and is now seventy- two years old. He graduated from the University of the City of New York, in the class of 1837. Mr. Howard commenced the study of law with S. S. Baxter, Attorney-General for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Shortly afterward he assumed the editorship of the Richmond Herald, which was afterwards changed to the Richmond Lyceum Journal. In May, 1840, he was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court. In the same year he married Miss E. A. Wilburn, daughter of Col. R. Wilburn, of Parisburg, Va., and was elected District Attorney and member of the State Convention for Logan county in 1841. Mr. Howard moved West in 1855, and settled in Wisconsin. President Polk commissioned him Post-master for Sheboyan, Wis., which office he held until 1849, at which time he resigned. In company with Dr. J. M. Ball and Rev. Mr. Stephens, Mr. Howard started for California, via the Santa Fe and Gila route. On this trip a child was born to Mrs. Howard, the first white child born in Arizona. Arriving at San Diego Mr. Howard's journey to San Francisco was delayed one month, owing to the Panama line only making monthly trips, and the last steamer had just left that port. On the following month (December) he arrived at San Francisco. Mr. Howard at once associated himself with Stephen J. Field, Esq., now Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court, and commenced the practice of law. In March, 1850, Mr. Howard and Mr. Ottinger undertook the coast expedition of the Laura Virginia association. It is due to this expedition that a re-discovery was made of what is now known as Humboldt Bay. For his valuable services on the L. V. A. expedition Major Howard was awarded the equivalent of $1500. At a meeting which was held soon after the successful entering of the bay, at which meeting Major Howard was the secretary, the name of Humboldt was given to this bay.
