THE FIRST ALCALDE

At the same meeting that provided us with a name for our beautiful bay, Maj. Howard was elected Alcalde for this district. In 1852 he was elected Public Administrator; in 1856-7, District Attorney; in 1858-9, County Superintendent of Schools. Until 1873 Mr. Howard had lived upon his farm on Humboldt Bluff, after which he moved to Eureka with his family, where he now resides. Mr. Howard possesses cultivated attainments, sound judgment, warm attachments and never surrenders his own convictions for the sake of popularity.

MRS. C. E. BLAKE

Mrs. Blake has gained the high reputation of being the leader of fashions in this city. The large and elegantly fitted-up establishment occupied by this enterprising lady, boasts the largest, freshest and most elegant stock of millinery goods to be found in the county. This lady's artistic taste has proven her adaptability to the business. In addition to the fine line of bonnets, both trimmed and untrimmed, she carries an elegant line of plumes, laces, feathers, tips, ribbons, velvets, satins, etc., of every description. She has placed her prices on a basis that at once reveals the secret of success. To the fine and elegant imported millinery goods and laces are added fair and honorable dealing. This is the highest business advantage attainable.

VANCE HOUSE

This hotel is an ornament to Eureka. It is conducted by Messrs. Race & Ellsworth. It fronts 110 feet on G street and 120 on Second. It has an elevation of seventy feet to the cupola, from which the eye is greeted with a panoramic vision of magnificent scenery of the beautiful bay and surrounding country. The Vance has three stories-lower 15 feet high, second 14 feet, and third II feet. There are about one hundred rooms, all supplied with gas, stationery marble wash- stands, hot and cold water, comfortable beds and call-bells. The family rooms, in fact the greater portion of the house, are heated by hot-air pipes. Every facility for comfort and convenience is offered to the invalid, tourist, merchant, sportsman and quiet family man. The table is supplied with only choice food. Wines and liquors, hair dressing parlors, hot and cold or steam baths, W. U. Telegraph office are all connected with the hotel. The Vance House is without doubt the best first-class hotel north of San Francisco. Messrs. Race & Ellsworth are genial and popular gentlemen. Their efforts merit success.

A. P. CAMPTON

One of the foremost citizens and enterprising men is Mr. A. P. Campton, of Rohnerville, the successful horticulturist and energetic member of the Horticultural Commission for Humboldt county. He is a zealous and successful experimenter

ALTON

Humboldt County, Cal., is the Junction of the Eel River and Eureka Railroad and Pacific Lumber Company's Rail- road. The importance of this town can only be estimated, when you are inform- ed that it is the key to the Overland Railroad. That the Great Waterways, the Van Duzen and Eel Rivers wash its shores-it is situated at the base of the greatest Redwood belt in the world, the Richest Valleys in the County can only be reached from Alton, the Junction.

MEL. CRISTIE

Probably no man of Humboldt county has a wider range of acquaintance or enjoys a larger circle of friends than the subject of this sketch. Mr. Cristie, or as he is more familiarly known, Mel .; has by strict attention to business, and employing only skilled assistants, built up an independent and lucrative business. His patronage is liberal, and derived from the leading citizens and transient visitors. While many similar establishments are termed "Parlors," few are able to compete with Mel.'s "Hair Dressing and Shaving Parlors." Every appearance in these parlors denotes care and taste. The tables are well supplied with newspapers and periodicals for the comfort and enjoyment of visitors. The mirror reflects many a face of our fair sex, who throng this establishment to have their hair fashionably trimmed and artistically arranged. Mr. Cristie is an affable and courteous gentleman, with a genial and companionable disposition, liberal to a fault when the cause of charity requires it. Few men better deserve space in this local history than does our esteemed fellow-townsman, Mel. Cristie.
