BERKELEY,

ALAMEDA COUNTY, is a beautiful residence town situated in the foot-hills north of Oakland, and distant about eight miles from San Francisco.

Berkeley is the site of the University of California, the massive buildings of which are plainly visible from all parts of the town, and from the bay. Also the State Asylum for the deaf, dumb, and blind, the buildings of which likewise stand in bold relief against the background of green-covered hills imme- diately in the rear. Berkeley is noted principally for its beauti- fully shaded walks and drives, its handsome residences, and its incomparable view of the surrounding country, the bay and its islands, San Francisco, the Golden Gate, and, away in the dim distance, the Pacific Ocean dotted here and there with passing vessels.

Berkeley is well provided with churches, also with schools, both public and private ... It has a post, express, and telegraph office, and is connected with Oakland by steam and horse cars; also with San Francisco (via Oakland), by local (C P R R) trains, making half-hourly trips during the day.

WEST BERKELEY

Lies along the bay on the line of the Central Pacific Railroad about one and one-half miles west of Berkeley, and is the location of several large manufacturing establishments, giving employ- ment to a large number of men. It has, also, churches, public schools, a post and telegraph office. It is connected with San Francisco by Central Pacific Railroad (via Oakland), and also by ferry.
