DECOTO.

A new town recently laid out on the Central Pacific Railroad, 20 miles from Oakland and 3 miles from Niles. Its projectors claim for it a promising future. Overshadowed on the rear by the high bluff's, which here form the ad- vanced sentinels of the coast range, and flanked and fronted by a broad vista of level plains, its wide avenues already well shaded with the fragrant eucalyptus would seem to justify its selection as the spot for a suburban home. It has post. express and telegraph offices already established.

HAYWARDS.

This town is situated in one of the most attractive portions of the county, twenty-two miles from San Francisco and one mile from the station of the same name on the Central Pacific Railroad.

The surrounding country is very fertile. The cereals, although producing largely, have been gradually giving way to fruit and vegetable culture. The dairy interest, already including many large establishments, is also becoming quite prominent in this locality. But it is to the super-abundant foliage in which it is embowered, including many ornamental trees,

noticeably among which is the Japanese Per- simmon that Haywards owes much for its present reputation. This feature has made it an established summer resort, and secures for it a fair share of the guests who seek relief in such scenes from the oppression of a city's summer, its principal hotel, the Haywards House, being always full during the season, and the drive to Tony Oakes't has come to be regarded as a second edition of a " a trip to Brighton." The population of Hay- wards is about fifteen hundred.
