ECUMENIC ORDER OF UNITED MECHANICS. -This organization is composed exclusively of mo- chanics, and has unlimited jurisdiction with original and absolute power to establish and perpetuate itself. Its primary associations are called Shops, with two degrees, and Senates, with ono, which is also a Mu- tual Benefit Society.
The Masters and Past Masters of Shops, and Archi- tects and Past Architects of Senates are eligible to and compose the Worthy Grand Councils of States and Territories. The Most Worthy Grand Architects and Past Worthy Grand Architects are eligible to and compose the Supreme Council of a Nation, and the Past and Present Supreme Architects compose the Ecumenic Congress of United Mechanics or Con- gress of Nations.
Its objects are to unite the mechanics of the world in one active, effective body; the better to protect themselves, improve their social condition, render trades and tradesmen more respectable, encourage ingenuity, reward genius, teach temperance and morality, and make better mechanics by a well- directed system of education. It is a secret order.

MECHANICS' DELIBERATIVE ASSEMBLY. -Organized April 17, 1873. Objects: To discuss a system of Labor Schools, to enable boys and girls to learn trades as a part of their education in the Com- mon Schools, and provide for the education and em- ployment of all classes of children; prepare bills to be presented to the Legislature of the State for adop- tion, and take such steps as may be necessary to se- cure their passage.

MECHANICS' STATE COUNCIL .- This is a rep- resentative body of mechanics in and for the State of California; it was organized November 20, 1867, for the purpose of uniting the trades in sustaining the eight-hour system of labor.
Gen. A. M. Winn was elected President, re-elected in 1868 and 1870 ; W. D. Delaney was elected in 1871, and Winn was re-elected in 1872-74.
Each association, working eight hours for a day, have three delegates; those who have only declared in favor of the system have two; unorganized trades may elect one. The Council may elect as permanent members ex-delegates and ex-presidents of asso- ciations having delegates in Council, or it may elect for and in consideration of faithful, valuable, and distinguished services.
Its meetings are held the first Wednesday even- ing of each month, and special meetings when bus- iness requires it.

MILLMEN'S MUTUAL PROTECTIVE ASSO- CIATION .- Organized December 12, 1870. Meets every Monday, at one o'clock, in the committee rooms of Mechanics' Institute. This association is com- posed of all the mill owners in San Francisco, Oak- land, Vallejo, and Napa, for the purpose of estab- lishing a uniform scale of prices, and for the protec- tion of their mutual interests.

MUTUAL PROVIDENT ASSOCIATION .- In- corporated September 8, 1868, for the purpose of af- fording immediate and efficient relief to the families of deceased members. Any person in good health may become a member of the association and secure its prospective benefits, by paying five dollars annu- ally, and one dollar on the death of each member, the number of members being limited to two thou- sand. Office, 113 Leidesdort Street.

Objects: First-The cultiva- tion and advancement of medical science by the in- terchange of clinical experience, and the discussion of modern medical improvements. The San Francisco Medical and Surgical Dispen- sary was established in the Young Men's Christian Association Building, in July, 1872, under the super- vision of this society, for the gratuitous medical and surgical treatment of the sick poor. It is open two hours daily. During the short time the Dispensary has been in operation, over eight hundred visits and prescriptions have been made, twenty minor surgi- cal operatians performed, and a large number of poor people relieved of their sufferings.
