SAN FRANCISCO TURN VEREIN .- Organized 1852. Hall north side of O'Farrell Street, between Mason and Taylor.


The object of this society is the cultivation of gym- nastic exercises in general ; to encourage morality; to improve health; to cultivate music, and to enter- tain and cultivate free religious and political senti- ments.


Stated meetings, first and third Wednesday even- ings of each month, at half past eight o'clock. Num- ber of members, two hundred and eighty-five, of which about sixty are attached to the vocal depart- ment, under the leadership of C. Fischer; twenty-five to the dramatic section, M. Frank, Reg .; thirty to the rifle section. Charles Zimmer, Captain ; and twenty to the fencing section, A. Rapp, Teacher. Besides this, there exists, in connection with the association, a Verein for boys, from fourteen to eight- een years, which numbers fifty-six members, and is called the Turnzoeglingsverein, governed by their own officers, under the supervision of three members of the San Francisco Turn Verein. Stated meetings, last Wednesday of each month.


There is also a school for boys from seven to four- teen years, which numbers two hundred and fifty pupils, and a school for girls, which numbers fifteen pupils.


Gymnastic exercises for members every Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from half past eight to ten o'clock ; for members of the Turnzoglingsverein, every Monday and Friday evenings; for boy pupils, every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings, from seven to half past eight o'clock: and for girl pupils, every Wednesday and Saturday after- noons, from half past three to five o'clock. Studies of vocal department every Monday evening, from half past eight to ten o'clock; drill of rifle section twice a month.


Social meetings for members are held every first and third Wednesday evenings, and on the last Sun- day evening of each month when a dramatic enter- tainment is given. A relief society for sick members, numbering one hundred and fifty members, is at- tached to the association.

The object of this association is to give dramatic and musical performances and entertainments, and to have social reunions. Number of members, three hundred, of which a majority take an active part in the performances.

THE OLYMPIC CLUB .- Reorganized September 1, 1873, by the consolidation of the San Francisco Olympic Club, which was organized in 1860, and the California Olympie Club, which was organized in 1871. Number of members, five hundred. Rooms, north- east corner New Montgomery and Howard streets.


The Olympic Club is at present in a very flourish- ing condition, having regularly organized classes in gymnastics, boxing, and fencing. on Monday, Wed- nesday, and Friday evenings, and Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday afternoons. The rooms of the associa- tion are most admirably adapted to the purposes of the organization, and afford accommodation for read- ing, chess, etc., and social parties. The apparatus is extensive and complete, and the accommodations are on a scale commensurate with its increasing import- ance.
