The Largest Quartz Mill in the World driven by Leffel's Double Turbine on a Horizontal Shaft.

MESSRS. LEFFEL & MYERS, Salem, Oregon- VIRGINIA CITY, NEV., February 15, 1873.

Gents-In our Eureka Mill, on the Carson River, we have one of your Leffel Wheels, 52 Inches in diameter placed on a horizontal shaft. The head is 38 feet. We use 8,000 cubic feet of water per minute. The wheel yields over 400 horse power, and has run constantly since the mill was started, giving us no trouble, and at all times perfectly at our command. The mill has 60 stamps, 950 pounds each, 26 pans, 14 settlers, 8 amalgamators, and all the necessary machinery for a gold and silver mill. It also pumps the water to supply the mill pans, etc., etc., and elevates the ore a height of 50 feet, on an incline of one foot to the rod. The immense power of the wheel at various times, has broken a 5-inch shaft in different parts of the mill, but no serious trouble has been experienced, as the wheel is worked at so near its maximum velocity, that an instant demand or relief of power does not seriously affect the velocity of the wheel. We crush from 180 to 200 tons of rock per day. We consider the Leffel Wheel far superior to any other Wheel in use, and as lately arranged on a horizontal shaft, superior to the upright. We have had much experience with overshots, as well as various turbines. In our opinion, the Leffel takes the lead. All things considered, it has no equal. We therefore cheerfully recommend your Wheels to all using water power. A. M. EDGINGTON, Gen. Supt. Union Mill Co. W. R. KING, Supt. Eureka Mill.

The above Company have recently purchased another 52-inch Wheel.

Having established ourselves in this city, we will give personal attention to our business, and thereby hope to give better satisfaction than we have been able to give heretofore through agents. We will also do a commission business in

BROWELL'S SALAMANDER CHIMNEY STACKS,

PATENTED APRIL 1, 1873.

Made of Fire Clay without Brick or Mortar. No decay to them.

No Danger, No Repairing, No Dirt, No Trouble, Perfect Ventilation. Cheap, Light, Portable, Fire-proof, Earthquake-proof.

The inventor of these complete Chimney Stacks is satisfied that he is offering to the public something that will be appreciated by every householder. They are particularly well adapted for the ventilation and heating of Churches, School houses, Theaters, and all kinds of public or private buildings. So univer- sal is their application that they can be readily set on any fire-place, or outside of brick or frame buildings ; in fact, they may be placed in any part of the house with perfect safety without going to the foundation. Can also be applied to cooking stoves, ranges, blast furnaces, pottery kilns, etc.

This improvement consists in constructing the chimney or stack of sections of fire-clay, earthenware, cement, or artificial stone, and surrounding said chimney with a metallic tube larger than the chimney, in order to provide the necessary ventilation for keeping the inner pipe cool, and for furnishing warm air to the rooms of the house. It also consists of a novel arrangement for binding the sections together in their upright position, and for fixing and protecting the joints where they meet.

By constructing chimneys in the above manner, all trouble about burning or wearing out is entirely avoided. They can be transported readily to any part of the State, and put in place by any mechanic. Their adoption has been recommended by leading architects in San Francisco and throughout the State, and by Fire Insurance Companies generally.

State and County Rights for Sale in every State and Territory, except California. Apply by letter or in person to the patentee.

DR. BARLOW J. SMITH'S ALLO - HYGIENOPATHIC

MEDICAL AND

PHRENOLOGICAL

INSTITUTE, Nos. 635 and 637 California St., San Francisco,

. Directly opposite St. Mary's Cathedral, between Kearny and Dupont Sts.

This is the only regular Water Cure where the principles of Allopathy are combined with Hygiene in the cure of disease in San Francisco, and by far the most extensive and com- plete Reform Medical Institute on the Pacific Coast.

10

BARLOW J. SMITH, M. D. PHRENOLOGIST.

GREAT REDUCTION IN PRICES.

We now give patents four weeks' Hygienic and Medical treatment, with Board and Room, from $60 to $80 per month ( in ordinary cases). Board, 86 per week; with Room, from $7 to $10. MEDICAL BATH from 50 cents to $1 each, or twelve for $10; twenty for $15.

There is not one man in twenty suffering from Rheumatism, Dyspepsia, Drug or Secondary Disease Spermatorrhoæ or Seminal Weakness, that cannot be permanently cured by one month's Water Cure ar Allo-Hygienopathic treatment, for one-half it commonly costs where drugs alone are depended on.

Where there is a fair constitution left, we never fail to cure the following diseases: Chronic, Inflan matory and Mercurial Rheumatism; Paralysis; Lung, Bronchical and Catarrh Affections; Diseases of th Heart, Kidneys, Liver, Dyspepsia, Constipation, Erysipelas, Scrofula, Piles, Inflammation of the Bowel Chronic and Acute Diarrhoea, and all the diseases and weakness peculiar to males and females, in from for to six weeks.

It is the height of folly for men suffering from Rheumatism, Neuralgia or Gout, to expect to be pe. manently cured by the use of drugs. In eight cases out of ten that we have treated in this Institute durir the past fifteen years, they have been caused by drug-taking. And not a case of Dyspepsia, Nervous General Debility can be found that has been cured by these physicians who merely practice drug medica tion.

Impotency is mainly due to exclusive drug medication, and not a single case can be overcome withor the aid of Hygienic Medication. Not a case of SEMINAL weakness can be cured without Hygienic Di and the Electro-Hygienic medicine combined.

INTELLIGENT MEN are daily losing confidence in exclusive drug medication, and are gainir more confidence in Hygiene and Nature in the preservation of health and the cure of disease.

There is a growing demand among intelligent men and women, young and old, for more knowledge i: regard to the laws of Mind and Body, Health and Disease, and the means by which they are preserved .. And to this end we give Free Public Lectures in our Hygiene Hall every Friday Evening, and invi: all who are interested.

We separate the Medical Department for Ladies, which is attended by a thoroughly competent woma: while the private residence of Dr. Smith, which is connected with the Home, is chiefly devoted to the a commodation of Ladies desiring Hygienic treatment.

There is no one female in twenty that has been suffering from Nervous Debility, or diseases peculie to their sex, that cannot be permanently cured by spending four to six weeks at our Home. This statemer in confidence, from our experience and observation in the last twenty years, and from the many who has been treated at our Home and elsewhere, and we have yet to learn of a single regret from husband or wife . time or means they have expended in Hygienic Medication. If the females of this State could be mac aware of the healthful advantages of this Hygiene Institute over the system of poisonous drug-taking, w. could not accommodate one in twenty who would seek admission.

It is the height of folly and the poorest of economy for women to suffer and to remain partially ber ridden as they do for months and years when they can be made well and happy by a few weeks' treatme at our Institute. Our prices are $20 by the single week, or six weeks for $100, for Ladies, with board, roo and treatment.

DR. B. J. SMITH invites all who are coming to San Francisco this season for the purpose of obtain ing medical aid to call at this Hygiene Home Water Cure and Phrenological Institute, Nos. 635 and 6; California Street, and avail themselves of an examination through Phrenology in regard to their healt. free of charge.

Dr. J. H. TUFFORD,

Formerly of Cincinnati, Ohio, has charge of the Medical Department, and will, in connection with DR. SMITH, examine and consult with ladies and gentlemen, in regard to Health, FREE OF CHARGE, from 9 A. M. to 8 P. M.
