Raton

RATON AND COLFAX COUNTY

GATE CITY OF THE SUNSHINE STATE.

Raton is pronounced Rah-tone, and means in Spanish, "Moun- tain Sjpuirrel." Raton is the county seat of Colfax county, and was incorporated on February 23d, 1891. Has at present a population of 7,000.

The elevation is 6,666 feet. The climate is unsurpassed and the secenry in and about Raton is second to none.

The National Old Trails road follows the historic Santa Fe Trail directly through Raton. The Gulf-to-Colorado Highway also passes through the city. None of the tributary points exceed 49 miles distant, and the nearest six miles, with direct railroad con- nections. and all are valuable contributors to Raton trade. The six flourishing camps of the Saint Louis, Rocky Mountain & Pacific Company, (coal mining) and the great Dawson camp of the Phelps- Dodge Corporation, together have a monthly payroll of about $400,- 000.

The coal deposits in the Raton mountains are almost too vast for comprehension. The official report of the United States Geologi- cal Survey places the known coal area at 870,000 acres, representing 30.805,000,000 tons of fine bituminous coal, estimated $40,000,000,- 000. The mining of 10,000,000 of tons each year for three thousand years would not exhaust this amazing field. This superabundance of cheap fuel makes Raton an ideal spot for manufacturers.

The Rocky Mountain Company last year mined and sold nearly 2,000,000 tons; the Phelps-Dodge Corporation over 1,000,800 tons: together they produced 90.5 of the coal mined in New Mexico.

Raton is a division point on the main line of the A .. T. & S. F. Ry. Company, with extensive shops and round-house, and with a monthly payroll averaging $115.000.00.

Raton has a municipally-owned water system valued at $400,- 000.00, and a lighting system worth $60.000.00; also a modern and complete sewerage system. There are three school buildings in Raton, one of which is the Colfax County High School, built at a cost of $125,000; also a High School gynasium, costing $40,000.00. with equipment worth about $2,000,000. The courses of study offered are modern and practical. Forty-three teachers are employed, and the present enrollment is 1,390 pupils. Raton has nine churches: a .840,000.00 public library; a $75.000.00 postoffice; a $60,000.00 municipal building and theatre: a modern and well equipped fire department, and three beautiful parks for the public.

The Miners' Hospital, a state institution, is strictly modern in every respect. There are three banks, with combined deposits of OVer $3,000.000.00. Raton has 985 telephones in active service under the Bell system. The Elks' Home of Raton cost $10.000.00. and the Masonic Fraternity purpose building a $100,000.00 temple. Ten blocks of paving is now under construction.

Raton

Raton has an ice plant; seven garages: an extensive green house; two lumber yards and a planing mill; two hotels-one of which is the largest in New Mexico; five restaurants and two news- papers.

Colfax county has a population of 25,000. with an area of 3.960 square miles, three times the size of Rhode Island. The average annual rainfall is 15.75 inches. The county's assessed valuation is $30,000,000. and its bonded indebtedness is only $59,000.00. This county has 240 miles of railroad, and . annually produces nearly 100,000 head of cattle and over 82,000 head of sheep. There are 36,545 acres of irrigated land and 62,622 acres of dry farming land in the county. besides 1,867,145 acres of grazing land. The principal crops are pinto beans, wheat, sugar beets, alfalfa, corn, oats and potatoes. There are wonderful opportunities for agricultural de- velopment in Colfax county, more especially in the immediate vi- cinity of Raton. Land values: Dry farming, $7.00 to $25.00 per acre: irrigated, $75.00 to $100.00 per acre.

The Northern New Mexico Fair Association is a Raton organiza- tion, occupying spaceous grounds within the city.

There are good opportunities in Raton for a flouring mill, a creamery and a produce house.

For detailed information write Raton Chamber of Commerce, Box 58, Raton, New Mexico.

YOU SHOULD BE REGISTERED

- Under every heading in the Directory where people might look for you. The Directory is the natural buyer's guide, and one glance the fact that it is working 365 days in the year, that no live concern can afford to overlook it.

Your name in bold type under the headings not only gives you an advantage over competitors not so described, but protects all other advertising you may do.

Frequently the desire to purchase is not aroused until the dis- play advertisement that suggested it is misplaced or thrown away. Then the natural place to look is in the Directory.

THE COST

Of registration is so slight when one considers its value, and the fact that it is working 365 days in the year, that no live concern can afford to overlook.
