SILVER CITY.

(Prepared by Silver City Chamber of Commerce.)

Silver City's citizenship of 4,500 people is inspired with confi- dence, based upon the business necessity for a great health and trading center at this point, and every modern convenience of wel- fare has been established.

Located as it is, in the southwestern part of the State of New Mexico, sixty-five miles north of the International boundary of Mexico, in the latitude of Savannah, Georgia, and Cairo, Egypt, having an altitude of 6,000 feet, Silver City has been declared by United States Government physicians to be the ideal health resort of the Southwest.

In the center of a great cattle and mineral section, Silver City's position as the distributing point for this great territory is impreg-

nable. The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway serves this sec- tion, Silver City being the terminal of the Rincon-Deming branch. The mining camps of Santa Rita, Hurle, Fierro. Pinos Altos, Tyrone, Hanover and Mogollon, with a combined population of over 12,000, patronize Silver City's business institutions. Stock raising has always been an important business in this section of the country and in addition there are two important irrigated districts for which Silver City is the main trading center.

Bank deposits of over $2.000,000 show the thrift of Silver City's people and are a true index of the general prosperity of the community.

With the Chino Copper Company, only sixteen miles east of here, mining at a rate of 70,000,000 pounds of copper the year; the Phelps-Douge Burro Mountain Copper Company, twelve miles west of here, producing a similar ratio and with other mining companies in close proximity outputting as never before, Silver City is a stir- ring scene of present day activity.

Grant County, the county seat of which Silver City is one of the richest in New Mexico, the assessed valuation being over $24,- 500,000. Besides the copper, there are to be found in this county, gold, silver, iron, vanadium, alum, turquoise, zinc, lead and meer- schaum mines. The immense timber lands of the Gila National Forest are to be found in Grant county. The estimated popula- tion of the county is 25,000.
