The New Mexico Military Institute is located here, with barracks, natatorium, brass band and all the modern conveniences of a well- equipped school. Roswell is the business center of the Pecos val- ley and all lines are represented by commodious, well managed houses, while the professional men are of a superior class. There are tributary to Roswell about 5,000 acres of orchards, three- fourths of which are in bearing, whose fruits are known throughout the West for their excellent color, flavor and keeping qualities; 15,000 to 18,000 acres of alfalfa hay and 5,000 to 6,000 acres in small fruits, vegetables, cereals, etc. The stock interests tribu- tary to Roswell are very large, three million pounds of wool are shipped annually, as well as many thousands of cattle, horses, sheep and lambs. Population 9,000. Altitude 3,570 feet.
