Santa Fe

SANTA FE.

The capital of New Mexico and second largest city in the State, enjoys the distinction of being the oldest town on the American continent. Its permanent settlement by Eur- poeans in 1543 antedates the founding of Jamestown and the landing of the Pilgrim Fathers at Plymouth by more than 20 years. It is the headquarters of the federal and state officers, the State Supreme court and the Catholic Diocese and Arch-bishop of New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado; it is adorned by many fine modern buildings, including the new Capitol, Federal building, court house, penitentiary, Indian schools, State Deaf and Dumb school, college for boys and an academy for girls, also a parochial school, a Presbyterian mission school for boys and one for girls, business houses and private residences, and is rendered interesting by the presence of the ancient adobe Palace and the oldest church and the oldest house standing on American soil. It has an excellent public school system, and all the religious denomina- tions are well represented. It is lighted by electricity. Its climate is remarkably equable. The summers are cooler at Santa Fe than any other meteorological station, while the mean temperature during January, which is the coldest month in the year, is about 28 degrees Fahrenheit. There are three railroads-the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, Den- ver & Rio Grande and the New Mexico Central Railroads.

Among the new buildings are a large addition to the Sanitarium costing $100,000, an opera house costing $25,000, an armory building $15,000, and a new Scottish Rite Cathedral at a cost of $250,000. The American School of Archaeology has been established and will be headquarters for research and excavating of the Cliff Dwellers, in connection is the New Mexico Museum.

New postoffice of Santa Fe style to cost $300,000 now in course of construction : new street lighting system to be ready in the summer. Work now progressing on a new 100- room hotel of Santa Fe style, on the old Fonda site at the end

Santa Fe Trail to cost, complete, $350,000. Work will com- mence in the summer on a Knights of Columbus home to cost $100,000. Work now progressing on the Bitulithic paving of nearly all city streets, same to cost $450,000.

Santa Fe county is the oldest mineral producer in the southwest. Gold, silver, lead, zinc, copper, turquoise, fire clay and building stone are found in large quantities. The leading districts are the Old and New Placers, the San Pedro, Golden, Macho, Glorieta and Cerrillos. At Madrid, near Cerrillos, are found large coal deposits and the coal deposits extend over a considerable portion of that part of the coun- try. The county seat, Santa Fe, capital of the state, is rich in historic interests and ideally located as a health resort.

Its immediate surroundings possess great, scenic beauty. On all sides rise majestic mountains to a height of 13,000 feet, while to the east, west and north are National Forests, 20 miles to the west is the wonderful Pajarito Cliff Dwellers' Park with 20,000 prehistoric habitations. Population of the city 12,500. Altitude 7,013 feet.
