PREFACE.
The Norwich Directory for 1870 (No. 10) contains 42 more pages than last year, about 7007 names, being an increase of 875 over those of last year. The number of changes of address is 1.323; erasures 2,912 and 2,280 addi- tions. It also contains in addition to its usual valuable statistical informa- tion the official vote of the State for State officers, as also the official vote for Senators. The grand list shows a gratifying gain in the wealth and prosperity of the Town. The total amount of the list being $22,619,455, from which deduct the property exempt $9,109,891, leaving $13,509,654, as the net taxable list, a gain of $299,362 over last year. Number of Dwelling Houses, 2,132 a gain of 147. A glance at the Joint Stock and Chartered Companies and Banks, shows the amount invested in Stock Companies, $4,029,000. In Railroad and Steamboats, $3,350,000 and in Banks, $2,635,000; in all, $10,014,000, and the different Savings Banks have in deposit over $8,000,000.
The publishers would render thanks to the merchants and others who have kindly shown their appreciation of the work by their pratronage and good will, and we hope our advertisers will be amply repaid for their invest- ment. We commend the volume with its imperfections, (for it is idle to suppose that out of the multitude of names there are no errors) to the atten- tion and patronage of the public.
