NORWICH FREE ACADEMY.
The Norwich Free Academy was incorporated in May, 1854, having been endowed to the amount of about $100,000 by the gifts of a few generous citizens of Norwich. Of the whole amount raised, $50,000 were reserved as a fund, for the main- tenance of the school, and with the remainder a lot was secured fronting Williams Park, and a noble school edifice erected. The productive fund now amounts to $90,000. The grounds are unsurpassed by those of any similar institution in the country. Connected with the Academy is the Peck Library, founded by Mrs. Harriet Peck Williams, wife of General Wm. Williams. This lady donated $7,000 for this purpose, $5,000 of which are to remain forever as a permanent fund to support and enlarge the Library. This fund, by judicious investments now amounts to $6,000, and books are being added every year. In 1859 Mrs. William P. Greene donated to the Academy a valuable house and lot on Broadway, for the residence of the principal of the Institution. The school has excellent and quite extensive apparatus for illustrating the natural sciences ; and familiar lectures with experiments are given each term in these branches. There is also an excellent Mineralogical and Geolo- gical cabinet, and a large collection of ancient and modernc oins.
By a donation from J. Newton Perkins Esq., a handsome bronze medal has been established in each of the following de- partments, viz : Latin and Greek, Mathematics, Natural Sci- ences, Chemistry, Declamation, English Composition, English Studies, Modern Languages, Drawing and Music. A fund amounting to $1,000, to be called the Williams fund, was giv- en in 1869, by Mrs. General Williams, the income of which is to be distributed yearly in three prizes, one for Book- Keeping, one for Reading, and one for Letter Writing. Pu- pils of both sexes are admitted, and tuition is FREE to those whose parents or guardians reside in the town of Norwich, but such pupils pay four dollars a term, for individual expenses. All others pay a tuition of THIRTY DOLLARS a year, in addition to the charge for incidentals.
