Miscellanea and Addenda, p. 840, 1: 19, the statement here made relative to the death of Hezekiah's wife, is pronounced incorrect by our friend, Henry Bright, Esq. of Northampton, Mass., who furnishes the following from his own original memoranda, copied from her gravestone in Scotland burying ground, Simsbury, viz : "Mrs. Chloe Holcomb, wife of Hezekiah Holcomb, and dau. of Capt. Abraham and Elizabeth Pinney, d. January 20, 1787, a. 37 yrs."

Also the following inscriptions : " Hezekiah Holcomb, Esq., d. Nov. 8, 1820, a. 70," and " Capt. Hezekiah Holcomb, d. July 17, 1794, a. 69."

He also adds his opinion " that the name should be spelled with a final e.

HISTORY OF ANCIENT WINDSOR.

1

Burke, in his Armory, and in his Landed Gentry of England, etc., etc., spells the name almost uniformly with a final e; in one place he spells the name Holcombe or Holtcombe, and remarks in a note, " Holtcombe is com- pounded of Holt, a Saxon word signifying woody, and cum, or, as written in Devonshire, combe, a valley between two hills." The W. Holcombes, coming from the west of England, would naturally have retained the final e, and there are some families of the name in the Southern States which so spell it.

degree as to cause him to make water a hundred times in 24 hours, but could void but very little at a time, sometimes but a few drops, attended with the most distressing pain, and, after the use of many things to no benefit, he was accidently informed by a travelling gentleman, that a tea made of rushes, viz : such as the women scowr their pails with, had been found by experience to be a sovereign remedy for that disease ; he, therefore, immediately ap- plied the medicine, and it had the desired effect-he drank plentifully of it, made it his constant drink, and in about eight or ten days his pain abated, and he voided abundance of gravel. He kept on in the use of it for about two months, when he found he was perfectly cured, and has remained well now for about two years, except when once he wet himself and took a great cold, which brought on the disease again, but the same medicine removed it immediately."
