The building first occupied stood corner of Albany av. and Woodland st. The second building at 102 Washington st. was torn down, July, 1886. The third edifice is now occupied on Russ st.

TRINITY COLLEGE, Chartered 1828.


The former site was west of Trinity street and north of Capitol avenue, now that part of Bushnell Park known as the Capitol grounds. Three brown stone buildings stood on the crest of the hill, facing the east. The first class graduated was in 1827. In 1878 the college was removed to its new site on Summit street, where the buildings stand on west part of a campus of seventy-eight acres. The library contains about 88,000 volumes, and is rapidly increasing. There is a large cabinet, a fine science building, an astronomical observatory, and a gymnasium with public hall. The annual commencement is held on the last Thursday in June.

WADSWORTH ATHENEUM, 206 Main st, Is a granite building of 100 ft. in length on Main st. and 80 ft. in depth in center wings, and 70 ft. in depth in outside wings. It is of the castelated structure, with central towers 70 feet in height and corner buttresses 86 ft. in height, with an extensive brick addition on the east of Tudor architecture, which is used, on the first floor, for the Library of the HARTFORD LIBRARY ASSOCIATION; and, on the second floor, for the WAT-


KINSON LIBRARY with the library of the HISTORICAL SOCIETY adjoining. The first floor of the main build- ing on the North is used for the PUBLIC READING room and TRUSTEES room. The whole South division of the main building is occupied by the CONNECTICUT HISTORICAL SOCIETY. The Central and Northern por- tions of the main building on the 2d floor are occupied as a PUBLIC ART GALLERY and for the ART SCHOOL The building was erected by voluntary contributions of citizens, with the land and fence, cost over $300.000. Commenced April, 1842, and completed in July, 1844, and the additions in January, 1898.

limited to the members of Protestant Evangelical Churches. Educational classes are maintained even- ings during the fall and winter months. There was an enrollment of over 411 students season 1896-7. The Educational Department known as the Hillyer In- stitute has an endowment of $50,000. A Working- man's Exchange is maintained as one of the many departments of the Association. Recreation rooms furnished with pool tables, and other games are pro- vided. The workingmen of the city assemble in large numbers at these rooms where social privileges are en- joyed free from the demoralizing influences of the sa- loon. All workingmen 18 years or over may join this department as well as that of the main association. The new building, cor. Jewell, Ford and Pearl streets, was opened November 8, 1898. It is a superior build- ing in all respects. See pages 680, 681.
