STATE SCHOOL FUND
At the end of fiscal year, Sept. 80, 1893, amountel to $2,008,048.97; nine-tenths of which is invested in real estate mortgages, und the balance in bank stocks and cash on hand. In the year 1795 this fund amount- ed to $1,200,000.00. From the income of this fund there has been distributed to the common schools uf this state between the years 1796 and 1896 inclusive $8,311,580.76. The Oct. 1895 census of children in the State between four and sixteen years of age, was 174,448, being an increase of 3,854 children over the previous year's enumeration. There are 1,340 school districts in the 167 towns of Coun. The school popula- tion in the agricultural towns has decreased the past decade. HERBERT E. BENTON, Commissioner.
