ELDERS' MEETING, SEPT. 22, AFTERNOON

Elders' meeting was held at the home of Orlando Ogden. Harry Rogers spoke at the church on the subject of "What Is

MINUTES

My Chief Business in Life?" The theme of the evening services was along the line of Social Purity. Sister Nora Colyn gave a reading on "Personal Purity." Bishop D. W. Grove gave the address of the evening on the subject of "Evils of the Cigarette Habit." The way Bro. Grove handled this subject showed that he knew what he was talking about, and he did not have a very fav- orable picture to show of the tobacco user.

SUNDAY-SCHOOL MEETING, THURSDAY, SEPT. 23, A. M.

H. N. Butler was chosen moderator, Harry Rogers, reading clerk, and Homer C. Caskey, writing clerk.

Importance of Early Christian Training in the Home and Sun- day-school .- L. A. Walker.

He believes the future progress of the church depends upon the training in the home and Sunday-school. There is a great responsibility upon the teachers and those in charge.

Organized Classes; Trained Teachers .- General discussion.

Organized efforts always pay best. We cannot afford to risk the training of our childdren to untrained teachers, any more than we would in our public schools.

Influence of the Teacher Upon the Pupil .- Wm. N. Glotfelty, Chas. Colyn.

Bro. Glotfelty spoke of the teacher's influence upon the con- duct and ideals of the pupil, while Bro. Colyn told us how the teachers should use their influence in securing interest and co- operation among the pupils.

Possibilities of Vacation Bible Schools .- Wm. U. Wagner.

This subject is indeed a timely one, and it is time the brethren are getting awake on this question. Our opportunities are great along this line. Start a Vacation Bible School next summer.

MINISTERIAL MEETING, AFTERNOON, SEPT. 23

The following officers were chosen : Homer C. Caskey, moder- ator; Chas. Colyn, reading clerk; W. D. Grove, writing clerk.

Individual Responsibility of World Evangelism .- J. D. Brower.

He spoke of the ministers' duty, and of their high calling. He believes that if they fulfill their sacred obligation they will have no time for anything except the ministry. He also showed that there is a part for the laity to perform, for how is the preacher to go unless he be sent?

298

HISTORY OF SOUTHERN IOWA

Duties of Ministers to Converts .- H. C. N. Coffman, Wm. U. Wagner.

Bro. Coffman spoke of the ministers' duty to converts before. baptism, and Bro. Wagner spoke of their duty after baptism. Much depends upon the elders and pastors. May God give us men who are not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ.

Developing Spirituality .- John Heckman.

We grow by doing. Service is the secret of catching the spirit. The blessing is on the other side of obedience. The spiritual blessing comes after we have performed the act.

The Need of the District .- H. N. Butler.

The great need of our District is for soul winners-men who are fired by the Holy Spirit with a passion for souls.

Distribution of Our Ministers .- D. P. Miller.

Our ministers should locate where they can do the most good. Some churches have six ministers, while other churches have none.

Our Relation to the Home .- Wm. E. Thompson.

The home is fundamental in building society. There is no substitute for the home. The home is the greatest factor in civilization. The double standard of morals is causing much harm.

THURSDAY EVENING, SEPT. 23

How Create Interest in the Christian Workers' Band .- Homer C. Caskey, C. E. Delp.

We must get a new vision of the great needs of the world. The leaders must first get up interest. The leader who has lost in- terest in souls has lost sight of Jesus.

Stirring Up Dormant Talent .- D. H. Fouts.

If things don't move, move them. We have plenty of talent if we can only get it to act.

Missionary Sermon .- A. P. Blough.

I am not discouraged with the outlook of the church. Evan- gelism is the order of the day. The challenge is that we rally to the call of the King of kings.

At the close of this meeting fifteen came forward and dedi- cated their lives anew to some special service in the church. It was indeed a spiritual meeting.

QUERIES

Salem church requests District Meeting for 1923. Request granted.

We, the Fairview church, ask District Meeting of Southern Iowa, assembled at North English, to rearrange the general pro- gram of our meeting so as to have the business session on the first day and a set time for closing with the missionary sermon, so as to lead to a more orderly closing of our District Meeting, that we might reach the grand climax at the closing hour.

This query was considered, with the third item of the query from the Libertyville church. A committee was appointed to in- vestigate this matter fully and report at next District Meeting. Committee: H. F. Caskey, Orlando Ogden, J. D. Brower.

Owing to the size of the District, and the distance between the churches, our delegate body is not acquainted with the qualifica- tions of the members of the different churches to fill the various offices ; therefore, we, the Council Bluffs church, petition the Dis- trict Meeting of Southern Iowa to grant the elders the privilege to nominate or recommend two names for each office.

Paper adopted.

We, the members of the Council Bluffs church, petition the District Meeting of Southern Iowa to devise some plan by which we may be able to distinguish between active and inactive mem- bers. Because of the fact that some do not help, either with their presence or with their money, we suggest that active mem- bers be classed as resident and inactive members as non-resident.

A committee of three was appointed to devise some plan by which we may be able to distinguish between active and inactive members. Committee : A. H. Brower, W. N. Glotfelty, H. F. Caskey.

We, the Libertyville church, ask District Meeting of 1922: First, That it be the duty of the District Clerk to announce time and place of District Meeting in the Gospel Messenger, at least six weeks in advance of time.

Second, That the District Clerk be elected for a term of three years instead of one.

Third, That the time of the business conference of the District Meeting be changed to the middle day of the combined meeting.

Fourth, That the District missions of Ottumwa and Council Bluffs be placed on a self-supporting basis by a gradual scale of self support.

Item No. 1, passed. Item No. 2, passed. No. 3, considered with query from Council Bluffs. No. 4, motion passed that this matter be placed in the hands of the Mission Board.
