SPECIAL SCHOOL

For several years it has been the custom to have a Special School in Des Moines about the middle of March. Such a school will prob- ably be held, although arrangements for it are not yet made. If held, the Custodians will be in charge, examinations will be given, and Masonic Instructors whose terms expire before or with the next Grand Lodge Communication may be checked for advancement. Watch for announcement of dates in the Grand Lodge Bulletin.

MNEMONICS

In spite of the fact that we have in the State of Iowa nearly 1,200 Instructors who are proficient in the Masonic Ritual and are ready and willing, even anxious, to help those who wish to attain accuracy in the work by the time-honored and legitimate method, from mouth to ear, yet we still have a number of lodges in which the officers continually and habitually violate their obligations and break Masonic

law with respect to the printed cipher, or "King Solomon" as it is sometimes called. Such officers should read the section in the Code dealing with ciphers-Section 390e, 1938 Code. We hope that many of these officers, or perhaps most of them, have not realized that they were committing a Masonic offense; and, when they do know it, will set about getting their work in the lawful way. Aside from the law angle, an officer who gets his work from a printed cipher is doing an injustice both to himself and to the Masonic Order, for he can never do his best work with that sort of training.

We have as our slogan and goal "An Instructor in Every Lodge," and more than two thirds of our lodges now have Instructors in their membership. But our progress is too slow. Let us do away with the ciphers and get down to business. There is a brother in every delinquent lodge who can give a real service to Masonry in general and to his own lodge in particular if he will prepare himself for examination to become a Masonic Instructor.

Fraternally yours,

CHARLES C. CLARK, Chairman JOHN T. AMES, Secretary THOMAS W. WELLINGTON

Board of Custodians.

Again we take pleasure in reporting a good year's work in the de- partment of ritualistic instruction. Most of the schools were well at- tended. Five Regional Schools were held, and the Instructors demon- strated their usual high degree of proficiency. The Grand Master attended all the Regional Schools and was accompanied each time by some of the other Grand Officers. They are all fine Instructors, and their presence added much to the efficiency and success of the schools as well as to the interest and impressiveness of the degrees conferred on real candidates. The District Schools were also very successful, some of them notably so. One of these, in response to a special re- quest, was held by the Grand Master and drew a large attendance.

The Special Representatives have done particularly well. A larger percentage than usual of the schools listed have been held and with good results. Where they were not held the fault was in almost every case due to the lack of co-operation on the part of the lodge.

Schools held during the past year are listed below:

Report of Memorial Committee

As we Masons come together In the lodge hall on the hill We shall miss some friendly faces, And some voices now are still. But these brothers whom we miss today Will live on in our lives,

And the influence of their work Upon the Temple still survives. Yes, a heritage is left us, By these brothers who are gone, And a charge to fill their places, Take our tools, and carry on.

Proceedings of the

[Cedar Rapids

At the customary Sunday morning meeting of the Instructors the Memorial Committee gave the following report:

Brethren, we meet again this Sabbath day to mingle together with true Masonic love for our Institution and friendship toward each other, and, while we can truly say that this meeting is a happy event and enjoyed by all of us each year, we must pause in our work and pleasure to pay tribute to our brothers who have passed away since our meeting last year.

They have been called upon to lay down the working tools of life and enter into the Grand Lodge on high.

The scythe of time, the leveler of all life, spares no man, regardless of his proficiency in any walk of life.

Our losses this year include four who have held positions of high honor in the Grand Lodge:

Homer A. Benjamin was raised in Waterloo July 1, 1919, and passed the examination for proficiency less than a year later-on June 7, 1920. He served with distinction in many departments of the Grand Lodge work and was elected Grand Master in 1939.

George L. Garton, P.S.G.W., had District Lecturer's Commission No. 50, dated June 7, 1906. Only two District Lecturers now living have Commissions older than his. Brother Garton's life was one of service, not only as a Mason but also as a citizen. For many years he was Secretary and Business Manager of the Des Moines public schools, a position of high honor and great responsibility.

Charles C. Hunt, for so long our Grand Secretary, was awarded his Commission as District Lecturer on October 29, 1905, and his number was 44. His reputation in Masonic circles was international. While in his prime probably no other man in the whole world was so well informed in all departments and branches of Masonic work. In 1937, on motion of Brother Charles C. Clark and by a unanimous ballot he was elected an Honorary Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Iowa-the only man who has ever received such distinction in this Grand Lodge.

Frank Oglevie, who was elected Senior Grand Warden one year ago, was particularly successful as an Instructor and had many friends. It seemed that he was just coming into his years of best service to Masonry. By finite reasoning it would seem that his work was not done, yet his column is broken.

We can truthfully say of all these brothers that, in spite of their busy lives of service in other fields of labor, they always kept them- selves perfectly accurate in the Iowa Ritual and were always ready and willing to give instruction in it when opportunity offered.

Cherishing their memory, we may truly say:

"To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die."

"They never quite leave us, our friends who have passed Through the shadows of death, to the sunlight above. A thousand sweet memories are holding them fast

To the places they blessed with their presence and love."

Fraternally submitted,

Memorial Committee.

Grand Lodge School

The Grand Lodge School was an outstanding success. The attend- ance was large and the Instructors demonstrated a high degree of accuracy in the ritualistic work. The committees in charge of the various divisions of the school functioned so efficiently that the in- terest never flagged.

The Custodians wish to express our sincere thanks to those who served on these committees, and especially to the committee of one who checked the registration sheet, the work cards, and the expense accounts-Brother Claude Shields.
