It is a pleasure, a distinct personal pleasure, and an honor to me to be the second Grand Master from Indiana to be entertained out here. I do hope next year when we hold our Grand Lodge of In- diana at Indianapolis on the second Tuesday of May we have so many fellows from Iowa singing "That's Where the Tall Corn Grows"

that our people back there in Indiana will feel sure it is great and pleasant when brethren of the three "I" States, Iowa, Indiana, and Illinois, dwell together and solve their problems in unity.
WILLIAM KOCH, Sovereign Grand Inspector General of the Scot- tish Rite in Iowa:
It is indeed a joy and satisfaction to me to be present at this ses- sion of the Grand Lodge and particularly to have a business as- sociate for 29 years act as second man or Deputy Grand Master of this important session of the Grand Lodge.
I am happy to bring greetings, Most Worshipful Sir, to you and to your brethren of the Grand Lodge, from the five Consistories in Iowa, located at Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Clinton, Davenport, and Sioux City. I am happy to tell you that, like your Blue Lodges, the Scottish Rite Consistories are thriving and prospering both in finances and in membership, as well as endeavoring to do the things that are expected to be done by a Masonic Body.
The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite has adopted as one of its slogans and one of its principles the support of the free public schools. We believe that the present situation and the growth of our country and the liberties and things we enjoy along that line are due to the public schools, which are distinctly American in their character. I need not tell you, too, that in cities efforts are being made to discredit the public schools of our country, and the growth of private and parochial schools is such that they are increasing in size and effectiveness because of the discrediting things that are said about our public schools. And if there is any one suggestion or recommendation I would like to make at this time to the individual Masons of Iowa it is that you alert yourselves in your several school districts and see to it that the public schools of Iowa have your individual support, as well as protection. These are unusual times, as you have always been told, and there are developments taking place which necessitate increasing the expenditures and increasing alertness and protection from various things which are tending toward the destruction of our country. Therefore it is important that we as individuals see to it that we become more interested in the welfare of our public schools.

BEN PATTON, Deputy Grand Master of Illinois: * * * *
I bring greetings from the Grand Lodge of Illinois to the brethren of Iowa. And we have approximately the same problems that have been mentioned here by various speakers, probably some of them a

little more aggravated than yours, and we are all striving, I am sure, to preserve this great nation of ours. We support our free schools in Illinois; we are vitally interested in seeing them per- petuated. We are interested in keeping the Church and the State separated; and, brethren, if we all act in unison, we will accomplish our aims and perpetuate this great system of government that has been handed to us by past generations. I am sure you are all in- terested in preserving this form of government, even with all its faults, because after all, brethren, where could you go to find a better place in which to live? I extend to all of you a cordial in- vitation to fraternize with the brethren of Illinois. Next October the Grand Lodge will meet in the City of Chicago, and any of you who can arrange to be present at that time will be most welcome.
EARL E. DUSENBERY, General Grand High Priest, General Grand Chapter, R.A.M.
I assure you I am very pleased and consider it a high honor to be received and recognized as the General Grand High Priest by my own Grand Lodge, and I am very happy to bring to you the greetings of the 600,000 Royal Arch Masons affiliated with the General Grand Chapter.
As I have visited Grand Chapters in various jurisdictions, I have been invited to visit the Grand Lodge, as many jurisdictions follow the English system from which came all of our Blue Lodge and Royal Arch Masonry, and the Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter meet together the same week. If I am given the opportunity to speak before the Grand Lodge, I always bring to them the greet- ings of the Masons of Iowa.
I find Iowa Masonry is well known throughout North America, for invariably where I have spoken before a Grand Lodge, after that session is over, several brethren came to me to ask questions about Iowa Masonry; our system of instruction; our Masonic Library; etc. In answer to their questions relative to our instruction, when I tell them we have over 1,200 District Lecturers and Masonic In- structors, they look at me as though they were sure I was greatly stretching the truth, but I tell them to look at our Proceedings, which I am sure will back me up.
In several instances in discussing our great Masonic Library, brethren have remarked that they hoped the Grand Lodge of Iowa would soon see fit to protect this priceless collection of books, docu- ments, etc., that could not possibly be replaced should they become destroyed. I assure you I was, as I am sure all of you were, highly pleased a few moments ago when you voted to build a fireproof libra-

ry and executive office building. We have the finest Masonic Library in the world, and every Mason in Iowa, I am sure, is very proud of this valuable possession.
Brethren, if I were to try and bring you something from my ob- servation and after listening to the addresses of Grand Masters, the talks of visiting brethren, and Masonic leaders, it would be the anxi- ety of Grand Masters and Masonic leaders over the seeming lack of full investigation of those who petition for the Mysteries. Many Grand Lodges are larger today than ever before. Candidates have been taken in by the thousands. A Grand Master of one of the large Grand Lodges, whose Grand Lodge had made a net increase the year before of way up in the thousands, said he felt sure that many of those thousands of candidates could not have been properly in- vestigated and screened as they should have been. Another Grand Master said they had discovered that several men had been initiated, passed, and raised in some of their lodges, whose ideas of govern- ment, ideas of religion, and ideas of the way of life were considerably different from those taught in Masonry and that these men were ordered to try and get into Masonry by their leaders. Remember, brethren, when you make a man a Mason in your lodge, you not only make him your brother but you make him a brother of every Mason in the world. Investigation and screening of candidates for the Mysteries are landmarks and ancient Masonic usages handed down to us by our Masonic brethren from time immemorial.
Brethren, I am proud that I am a Past Master of one of the lodges in Iowa, New Century Lodge No. 656. New Century was the first lodge chartered by the Grand Lodge of Iowa in its second hundred years; thus, the name New Century. After we received our Dispen- sation, we were placed, as is customary, under the supervision of a Past Officer and District Lecturer to see we did not stray from the straight and narrow path. This brother is one of the best posted Masons in Iowa in Ritual and floor work and, as none of us were too good in either, he spent considerable time instructing us. Once when we could not use one of the lodge rooms, we set up a lodge for in- struction in the kitchen. This brother is now our Grand Master, and I am very happy to be present at the session over which he pre- sides as Grand Master.
Most Worshipful Grand Master, New Century Lodge No. 656 will always have a high regard and a warm affection for you and I congratulate you on a very successful administration and a very fine Grand Lodge Communication. And to your successor and the Grand Lodge of Iowa I wish a most happy and successful Masonic year.

TO A WATERFOWL William Cullen Bryant
Whither, midst falling dew, While glow the heavens with the last steps of day, Far, through their rosy depths, dost thou pursue Thy solitary way?
There is a Power whose care Teaches thy way along that pathless coast- The desert and illimitable air- Lone wandering, but not lost.
All day thy wings have fanned, At that far height, the cold, thin atmosphere, Yet stoop not, weary, to the welcome land, Though the dark night is near.
And soon that toil shall end; Soon shalt thou find a summer home, and rest, And scream among thy fellows; reeds shall bend, Soon, o'er thy sheltered nest.
Thou'rt gone, the abyss of heaven Hath swallowed up thy form; yet, on my heart Deeply has sunk the lesson thou hast given, And shall not soon depart.
He who, from zone to zone, Guides thro' the boundless sky thy certain flight, In the long way that I must tread alone, Will lead my steps aright.
