The President's Report.
DEAR BRETHREN: Another synodical year has passed into history, and its close finds us, through the providence of God, as- sembled again, with ranks unbroken by death, for the transaction of such business as in our humble judgment will best conduce to the advancement of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ here upon earth. Let us then, first of all, make due acknowledgment of God's good- ness to us and invoke his blessings upon our labors. May he prosper the work which he has committed into our hands.
This initial year of the twentieth century, and the thirty-first of our Synod's existence, opens most auspiciously before us. Here- tofore our energies were chiefly devoted to the retention of what we as a Synod had. Our work was largely an effort to gather up the fragments which were left us as our heritage. In this we have succeeded quite well, and are now come upon the stage from which we can not only look back with a degree of satisfaction, but for- ward also, and view the whole field before us. We have come to that point where we must throw out our forces and occupy the strategic points; plan for the extension of our work, so that our synodical structure may not only rest upon a solid foundation, but may also develop symmetrically and harmoniously in all its de- tails. With institutions of mercy within our bounds appealing to the benevolence of our people and exhibiting most beautifully Lutheranism at work; with the seminary at hand and its stability assured, furnishing the workmen for the fields rapidly opening before us, we as a Synod surely have immense opportunities for doing good. Our Lord has set before us an open door and we are inexcusable if we do not enter therein and establish his work.
