S. P. Blake was a member of the Maine Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church for fifty years. Dr. Blake graduated in medicine at the medical department of Harvard University, July 20, 1853. He served as house physician in the Massachusetts General Hospital for one year. After practicing medicine in Boston for three years he went to Chicago in 1856. He leased the old City Hospital building and organized the second hospital in Chicago. In 1861 Dr. Blake was commissioned Surgeon of the Nineteenth Illinois Volunteers, and accompanied the regiment to Missouri. He organized the General Hospital at Quincy, Illinois. After the Thirty-Ninth was accepted, he transferred to it as the surgeon.
