Nathaniel Tibbetts was murdered on the even- ing of October 18th, 1864, under the following circumstances : The Republicans of Abington township met at Abington the evening after the election for state officers, for the purpose of re- joieing over the result ; and as men have some- times expressed their joy by burning each others' hats, it was introduced on this occasion. A young man by the name of Francis M. Holler, who belonged to the opposite party, went into the crowd. When abont to do so he was advised by his political friends to stay away. He refused to listen to the advice given, and, as all expected, his hat was soon added to the fuel for the illu- cor High and West River, Milton.
