President's Report

DEAR BRETHREN OF THE CHICAGO SYNOD:

By the preserving care and loving mercy of Almighty God, we are permitted to meet in this, the Thirty-sixth Annual Convention of this Synodical body.

Our's is a most stirring and eventful time-Our's is surely a day of opportunity.

The ingenious and inquiring mind of man has penetrated so far into the field of invention and discovery; has so wonderfully explored the realm of Nature, that her forces have been analyzed and converted into obedient servants to the will of man.

The wonderful system of communication by means of the thunder- bolt, has eliminated both time and distance in the world's exchange + of thought.

The modern printing-press, the modern facilities for every conceiv- able production, as well as for trade, travel and commerce, are such as to keep us under the constant pressure of startling wonders.

If the facilities for doing things to-day were consecrated to the service of God, eternity alone could report the good accomplished. Most wonderful is our Civilization! But there is a wide difference between Civilization and Christianization which must be recognized. Steam and electricity, interchange of thought and commerce, love of . travel, of ease, of luxury and of worldly gain will not of themselves change depravity into righteousness, conform the heart and life of man to the will of God, or bring "Peace on earth and good will to men".

In the midst of all our present-day opportunities, advantages and privileges, we find that men's hearts are still cruel, proud and selfish.

Recent wars were fought with all the horrors of former times. Recent investigations show that men holding many of the world's high positions of trust and honor, do not heed the teachings of the Golden Rule, nor have they chosen the way of truth. Sordid politicians and financiers bring our institutions and laws into disrepute, and were it not for the influence of the Church, the body of believers which has the welfare of our country and of the souls of our people at heart, the love of mammon, to-day, would be as cruel as in the days of yore.

Turning from the State to the Church, we find that materialism, skepticism and fanaticism are painfully in evidence.

8

There are so many who have no clear conception of God's way of salvation, who are running after every new thing, embracing the strangest and absurdest vagaries, and are being given over to soul- destroying delusions.
