PRESIDENT'S REPORT.
DEAR BRETHREN:
Owing to the removal of your President beyond the bounds of the Chicago Synod, it becomes my task as successor in his duties, to render to you the usual President's Report.
The times in which this the Thirty-seventh Annual Con- vention falls are times in which the task which God has given to the Church is with difficulty accomplished. The task of the Church is to make disciples of all men and this task is ren- dered exceedingly hard by the spirit of our times.
The interests of the Church are pre-eminently spiritual, eternal, while those of our age are material and temporal. The Church is or should be interested in the material and temporal welfare of mankind also, but her interests in the spiritual and eternal must ever be paramount. As a direct result of this in- tense interest in the material and temporal welfare, to the ex- clusion of the spiritual and eternal well being, we find positions of power and trust basely degraded and betrayed. Bribery and corruption are rampant. God's holy institutions and ordinances are held in light esteem, to the detriment' of the well-being of Family, State and Church. Family ties, especially those of marriage are weakened or entirely broken, enemies of the true welfare of the State are found, answering to every description
8
and the Church suffers in a degree no less than these. Against the spirit which gives rise to all these evils the Church must valiantly contend. Her weapons as of old must continue to be the Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. That weapon so skillfully used by our Saviour in his conflict with Satan, can be safely relied upon.
But while there is much to discourage the friend of the Church there is also much to encourage him. The very fact that in the midst of such difficulties, the Church cannot only exist, but actually make progress is in itself a proof positive of the divine power and mission. The problem of the Church is, in our own land, becoming largely a problem of the cities. More and more is the population forsaking the country and flocking to the cities. In the year 1850 only one-eighth of our pop- ulation lived in cities of 8,000 or over. Today, much more than one-half are found in cities of 8,000 or over, and just in pro- portion as our population changes from rural to urban, does the difficulty of evangelization become the more difficult.
This is because of several factors, not least among which is the polyglot composition of our cities. In some of the larger American cities, one would scarcely look in vain for a rep- resentative of any known people. This polyglot composition of our cities places a peculiar responsibility on our polyglot Church.
Other factors which render the problem of the city difficult, are the environments which oftentimes is fatal to religious life; a lack of mutual interest which leads each family to be con- cerned more or less exclusively about its own welfare; lack of homes, which causes a continual moving from place to place. The fact that the Lutheran population of several of our larg- est American cities forms a very large proportion of the total population of these cities, larger : in fact, than of any other Protestant Denomination, also lays a well defined duty at our door. The cities are the strategetic points. Efforts should be concentrated in them.
The conviction is growing more and more, that the Lutheran Church has a great mission to perform in our land, and expres- sion is constantly being given to this conviction both by those within and those without our denomination. This conviction seems to be well grounded, for the growth of the Lutheran Church continues to be much greater proportionately than that of any other denomination. Of this growth the Chicago Syncd enjoys her just share. .
Upon the removal of President Hogshead, he sent to me a report of his official acts, together with such other affairs as touch the welfare of our Synod. This report follows:
