figure it out for yourself. Build a rapid transit from North Topeka to Silver Lake-won't settlements spring up all the way? Won't these grow closer and closer together, till there will be one continuous street from North Topeka to Silver Lake? You can see this actually going on wherever lines have been built. Well, won't the rapid transits run to Grantville, to Meriden, to Auburn, to Dover, to Alma, to Manhattan, to Leavenworth, and all the other surrounding country towns? and won't the town grow the same way all along all thesc lines? Topeka has a future you have never dreamed of, and it will lose you good money if you forget it. Have we not Chicago Heights already on the market, (and in the courts,) twelve miles to the north? Please keep your grins of incredulity to yourself, and adjust your dis- arranged vest. This is no folly.

Topeka is no mere bread-and-butter emporium. We live here. We didn't come here merely to do business. We can read and write, as well as cipher, and can read books as well as keep them. The city is full of the very best private libraries, and few are the homes that have no standard books, while our large public libraries-State, city, college and public school-are in constant and intelligent use by all classes of people. Look at our book stores, and see what kind of books it pays them to keep in stock. There are no such stocks west of St. Louis elsewhere. And the prosperity of our citizens is shown by the fact that our book stores never sell a book without getting the cash at the time. Every one of them has told me so; and in such a way I know it is true. Yet they sell enormous quantities of books. Wc take to art, too, and have a profusion of studios and art schools, and, besides, fine collections in people's homes. The State Art Association has a magnificent selection of sculpture and fine copies of the masters. Even our house and sign painters carry palettes and embellished boxes instead of vulgar, dripping buckets as of yore. And we dress: look at the people on our streets and at operas or at church, and see the dress goods, the millinery and the hand-me-down please-press-the- creascs-out masculine garments displayed in the show windows. We have electric lights and infinite gas, electric power for machinery, tele- graph, telephones, district telegraph, fire alarms, transportation com -; panies, advanced fire-department apparatus, and such direct and speedy communication with everywhere that the whole world is laid under contribution for our comfort, and northern ice meets tropic fruits at our very doors, so that living is more commodious here than in Boston or New York. Five daily papers, with another coming, furnish us the

world's news at breakfast and at supper, and often give us the news before it has happened. We have twelve flour mills, with a capacity of three thousand barrels a day, and thirty-five churches, with a saving capacity of a whole population of souls every week, although, were immigration to cease, there would be nothing for them to do. We have Anarchists who are capitalists, and conservatives who are day laborers. We have the hottest hot weather, the coldest cold weather, the wettest wet weather, the dryest dry weather and the loveliest lovely weather, all the year 'round, to be found anywhere on earth, not even Italy ex- cepted. Our politicians are the cutest, our lawyers and doctors the surest, our preachers and teachers the ablest, our women the hand- somest, our babies the most numerous and the healthiest and prettiest, our councilmen the richest, our taxes the lowest, our people the happi- est, our courts the speediest, and our police the most suspicious of any city in ancient or in modern times.

Radges' Directory is a directory of the city-of the people who still live, and live here. It has not included the cemeteries, the hotel registers, nor the rosters of the county schools. You can take every name in this book, and go find some actual resident to call by it. And it is a directory - not a cheap advertising scheme.

It is an annual directory. Once it was but biennial, but that will not do now; indeed, it is doubtful whether our people will long put up with even an annual directory. Some already talk of a monthly publication, with a daily supplement, while the city is getting its growth. And finally, it is Radges' Directory; and everybody at all familiar with such things will swear, if need be, that Radges is the only man who has ever made a real, honest, find-what-you-are-looking- for city directory.

I have now gone over my whole subject, and here is the book. I might have said much more, had I imitated my predecessors and talked extravagance; but I have preferred to confine myself rigidly to a simple narration of plain facts, omitting many of even these, lest they appear too extravagant for belief to any but. citizens. I have done my duty, and have, I hope, set an example of veracity to be fol- lowed by all who may come after me; and as the copy boy has come after me already, I must, though with reluctance, let loose and con- clude. There is no necessity for a peroration, and I can't find one any how. Let's quit.

STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE. [COPYRIGHT, 1888, BY SAM. RADGES.]

The houses throughout the city are numbered in accordance with what is known as the Philadelphia or decimal system, the base or dividing line for streets running north and south being Kansas avenue, the principal business thoroughfare, and First avenue for all streets running east and west.

Under this system, one hundred numbers are set apart for the houses between every two streets in the city-except Huntoon and King streets, which run parallel with the numerically-named streets. Commencing at First avenue with 100, numbers increase, with the odd figures on the west side, to 135, where Second street is reached; here 200 commences, and so on, increasing one hundred to the block, to the city limits. North of First avenue the numbers also commence at 100; at Crane street, 200, and on the north bank of the Kansas river at 500, allowing the intervening two hundred for the bend in the river in the eastern portion of the city, where there are streets north of Crane street, south of the river. At Kansas avenue, all streets run- ning at right angles with it are divided east and west, the even numbers being on the north side of the streets. Commencing at 100 on the first twenty-five feet of ground fronting south, regardless as to the frontage of the building located thereon, the numbers increase two for each twenty-five feet of space in the block, 122 being reached at the inter- section of the next street. Two hundred then commences on the op- posite corner, and increases in like manner for the next block, and so on, increasing one hundred for each block, Topeka avenue being reached at 500 on the west, and the same number on the east side of the city, at Jefferson street.

The simplicity of this system enables every person to readily locate any address, and it at the same time furnishes an idea of the distance to the locality. If the desired number is 320, on any street running east or west, it is on the third block from Kansas avenue; No. 720, on the seventh block, and so on; the hundreds designating the num- of streets distant from Kansas avenue, and the tens and units the et house in the block.
