LIBRARIES.


Bethany College Library. Connected with the College of the Sisters of Bethany it comprises one of the most valuable collections of art literature in the west, and is replete with the standard works of foreign and American authors. The library is designed only for the accommodation of the scholars, teachers and faculty of the college, and contains several thousand volumes.


City Library, is located in the State Capitol grounds, fronting on Eighth avenue, near Jackson street, and occupies a magnificent building, especially erected for its use, at a cost of over $40,000. To- peka's free library, containing over 10,000 volumes of literature, stands open to all citizens desirous of availing themselves of its privileges. During the past year 1,005 volumes have been added to its shelves, besides 100 copies of periodicals kept on file in its reading rooms. The library is supported by general taxation, and is in charge of Olin S. Davis, city librarian.


Lincoln School Library. Through the untiring efforts of a large number of persons interested in the advancement of education, donations have been made and numerous entertainments given in be- half of this library, which has already a large and well-selected collec- tion of literary works, which will be greatly increased during the present year.


Library of the State Historical Society, established under the laws of the State. Its collection of valuable books, papers and manu- script writings are specially intended for the material to form the history of Kansas in respect to its antiquities, its political career, its institutions and material development. It now contains nearly 35,000 volumes, and is growing very rapidly, under the supervision of the State board and their efficient secretary, F. G. Adams, librarian. (See Museums.)


State Library. One of the largest and most valuable law libraries in the country is owned by Kansas, which is located on the basement floor in the east wing of the State House, in charge of the State Libra- rian, H. J. Dennis. It is open during business hours to visitors, and free reference to all books is allowed in the library.


Washburn College Library. The magnificent library building just completed, under the direction of the board of directors of this institution, commands the highest praise of their excellent judgment in behalf of their trust. Thousands of volumes of the choicest litera- ture, comprising scientific, historical, poetical and biographical works,

are included in the collection, to which all students in the college have free access. It is destined to become one of the largest and most val- uable libraries in the West. .


MUSEUMS.


Agricultural Society. Visitors to the State Capitol should not fail to visit the museum connected with the State Agricultural Depart- ment, in the west wing of the State House, which is open from 9 A. M. to 5 P. M. daily except Sundays. It contains a magnificent display of the products of the State, and a miscellaneous collection of other inter- esting specimens of the resources of Kansas.


Goss Collection. Named after its collector, Col. N. S. Goss, who has spent years of labor in the accumulation of one of the finest orni- thological museums in the country. It is located in the east wing of State Capitol building, and is free to visitors. This magnificent collec- tion of birds was presented by Col. Goss to the State, conditioned that he have the control and supervision of it during his lifetime with- out pay, after which it will revert to the State absolutely.


State Historical Society. This museum is a portion of the large and valuable collection accumulated by the society bearing its name, and consists of curiosities, pictures and other relics of the early days of Kansas. Many interesting memories are here preserved, and count- less pre-historic novelties are being constantly added. It is supported by State appropriations, is in charge of the secretary, F. G. Adams, and is open to visitors during business hours, in the west wing of the State House.

SECOND CLASS .- For publishers and news agents, one cent for each pound or fraction thereof. Second class matter, sent by other than publishers, in unsealed wrappers only (all other matter inclosed in notched envelopes must pay letter rates) one cent for each four ounces or fraction thereof, which must be fully prepaid.


THIRD CLASS .- This includes circulars, chromos, engravings, hand- bills, lithographs, photographs, proof sheets and manuscript ac- companying the same, productions by the electric pen, hektograph, metallograph, papyrograph, and in short any reproduction upon paper by any process except handwriting and the copying press, one cent for each two ounces or fraction thereof. Limit of weight, four lbs., except for a single book, which may weigh more.


FOURTH CLASS .- All mailable matter not included in the three pre- ceding classes which is so prepared for mailing as to be easily with- drawn from the wrapper and examined. Rate one cent per ounce or fraction thereof. Limit of weight, four lbs. Full payment compul- sory.

RAILROADS.


The railway statistics of the State show over 80,000 miles of com- pleted roadway, being an increase of over 2,000 miles during the past two years, representing capital stock to the amount of $350,000,000. Topeka affords the advantages of four of the principal railroads in the country, and a feeder of Santa Fé system.
