the greatest railroad corporation in the world. Over 7,000 miles or road are owned by this system, extending from the lakes to the Pacific ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The general offices of this mammoth corporation are located here, (Topeka,) employing nearly 500 officers, clerks, accountants and engineers, as are also their general machine shops and locomotive works, employing upwards of 2,000 skilled me- chanics and artisans.

CHICAGO, KANSAS & NEBRASKA RAILROAD. ( Rock Island Route.)

Like an immense hand stretching over the entire State, with the wrist resting upon the bank of the Missouri river, this road has in- vaded an extent of territory not generally realized. Its iron fingers stretching in varied directions, it is reaching westward with marvelous rapidity. The general offices of this gigantic corporation are also es- tablished in this city, occupying an elegant new office and depot build- ing erected for their special use.

UNION PACIFIC RAILWAY. ( Kansas Division.)

This is the pioneer road in Kansas, and was at one time an impor- tant factor in the growth and prosperity of Topeka; but of late years its importance has dwindled down to a "whistling station," so far as its accommodations to this city are concerned.

MISSOURI PACIFIC RAILWAY. (Kansas, Nebraska and Dakota Division.)

Topeka's connection with the Gould system gives it another im- portant railroad feeder, which is rapidly gaining in public favor, and is destined to become one of the popular roads in the Sunflower State.

LEAVENWORTH, TOPEKA & SOUTHWESTERN RAILROAD. The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad controls the interests of this corporation.
