POPULATION OF TOPEKA.
The evidences of the rapid growth and development of the city are given in a concise and comparative statement on this page, the figures given being the result of a direct count, and a careful comparison of this Directory with those immediately preceding it, and are therefore wholly reliable. In 1877, the population was 8,491; in 1878, 9,018; in 1879, 11.204; in 1880, 15,527 (U. S. census); increasing in 1881 to 16,280. The census of 1882 showed 21,562, and in 1883, 22,625. In the spring of 1884 the city was credited with 22,636, and in 1885 with 23,435; the following year over five thousand were gained, and in 1887 a direct census showed over 38,000. On the first of May, 1888, the population of the city, including its additions, is in round figures 46,000. Based upon an actual and accurate canvass of the city during the month of April, 1887, the population was 30,000 within the ward boundaries, as follows:
