Chesterfield, Mass. - Church Records

October ye 30th. day, A.D.1762

This day was kept as a Day of Fasting and Prayer by ye good people and Inhabitants of Chesterfield, preparation to ye ordination and solemn setting apart Mr.Benj. Hills to the pastoral care and charge of ye people, and the particular Members of other Chhs. D.D. on P. Day by Solemn compact and agree- ment enter into Covenant with God and one another and were thereupon imbodied and declared to be a particular Church of Christ by Rev.Messers (Sam'l Hopkins (John Hooker

Chesterfield Jan. 15 1762 ( ) Benjamin Mills, Clerk 1 c!

The following is the Confession of Faith, Covenant and other articles consented to and agreed upon by ye Ch. m in Chesterfield on sd. day set apart as afore'd; The confession of Faith is as follows : - ? I We believe yt. there is one only living and true God in three persons, Father, Son, and holy Gost, that in ye beginning God made Heaven and Earth:

II. We believe yt ød. Scriptures of ye old and new[testament] are ye word of God and ye only perfect Rule of Faith and Practice.

III. We believe yt. man at first was made in ye image of God, holy and upright; yt. God entered into a Covenant of Life with him upon condition of perfect obedience, particularly forbidding him to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil upon pain of death.

IV. We believe yt. our first parents sinned by eating of forbidden fruit and as .Adam was a Publick head and representative, thereby exposed himself and all his posterity to the wrath of God and Everlasting Death.

V. We believe yt in our fallen state, God has of his mere grace and good pleasure from all eternity, determined to save some of the lost children of men and that those whom he hath thus chosen, he will in his own time effectually call and finally save.

VI. We believe yt the Holy Scriptures reveal yt only method God has proposed for their salvation and that in order to execute the purpose of his Grace therein, he has appointed his Son Jesus Christ, to be the only mediator and Savior of Sinners whom he has sent into the world in our nature. That whosever believeth on him should not perish but have everlasting life, and that through his, Righteousness and Atonement, all, and none but those, who believe are Justified and Saved:

VII. We believe yt no man in his natural state has power to believe or do anything whereby he can be intitled to Salvation but that it is owing to the saving influences of God's Spirit working in us, both to will and to do of his own good Pleasure.

VIII. We believe yt the last day Christ shall raise the dead and judge the World in Rightousness, shall receive the Righteousto everlasting life and condemn the ungodly to everlasting punishment.

out of his possession and as may seem in ye Complaint, the matter being considered, it unanimously voted by ye brethren yt P. Benjamin was not worthy of censure or of being debared from Gospel privileges for anything which he had accused ye P.Robert of ytaccusation being grounded on some particular circum- stances which seemed at last to appear against ye P. Robert or at least ye Brethren thought so: Ye circumstances are too long here to be related but may be known from ye evidence ye present.

Chose Deacon Benj'n Tupper for ye first Quorister in this church.

April 29 1767

Then was held a Ch'h meeting in order to come into some method yt ye conduct of Profession (if possible) might be regulated by ye gospel: (The occasion of it was, there were many of ym who were negligent in attending ye ordinances of ye Gospel many times staying away from ye Lord's Supper, & neglecting one opportunity after another to bring their children to Baptism. ) It was therefore proposed and voted as follows :- yt if any professor should. without sufficient reason absent himself from ye Sacrement of ye supper, he should make a publick retraction & acknowledgement therefore, or be liable to ye Censure of ye Ch'h & it should be such a reason as should be judged suffic- ient by ye church, if he pretended to effect a reason for to excuse himself in staying away, so also if any opportunity was neglected to bring children to Baptism and as Brother Daniel Winter has not attended the ordinances of ye Gospel since I have been Settled (which is going on three years ) it was concluded upon and voted to send a Committee to know his reason or let him know yt he should be suspended from ye ordinances of ye Gospel: The Committee chosen Jan.

wereBrother Buck, Brother Healy & Brother Stearns; & by ye way, Brother Winter was desired to come at this meeting and offer his reasons for ye above mentioned neglect, or he had gone on in it against freequent warnings & councils to ye. contrary: & as Brother Tupper and Brother Burnel by yedesire of ye Brethren, had before to talk with him ye same account, & he chose, ( as I understood ) not to give ym any account about it, at lest( least ) as a Committee sent to him for yt purpose, in short ye case was, he denied ye Ch'h Right to deal with him.

June 28 1769

At a church meeting (after Solemn Prayer to Almighty God for direction) voted yt Publick Confessions for Scandalous Sins should be made before the whole congregation and the offender to stand in the Broad Alley.

And whereas Brother John Wilder has neglected Baptism for his youngest child for a considerable time, voted,yt Brother Abner Brown and Brother Joshua Healey should be a committee to go & discourse with him about yt & know the reason of yt neglect.
