must have a Directory not only to give the names and ad- dresses of its citizens, but also to give the character of pro- gressiveness that would record the names of its people for historical purposes. Every one has forefathers, these fore- fathers have made the history of this country. Some day you will be the forefather and your descendants can vis- ualize your life's work more quickly through registration in the City Directory of your time than in any other way. The BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF THE MASSES IS CONTAINED IN THE CITY DIRECTORY AND IN NO OTHER PLACE, which stamps its importance to the family. To make your history watch your Directory reg- istration, to see that it accurately records your position in life from year to year. In this year 1944 there are estimated to be over 11,000 citizens of Cambridge serving in the armed forces of the United States. These names are in this Directory with branch of service indicated- truly a real historical volume.

The publishers of this Directory consider it advisable and desirable to set forth the follow- g paragraphs, in as simple and attractive a manner as possible, to enable the readers of these escriptive pages to comprehend as many of the outstanding features of Cambridge as limited ace permits. The local resident, the visitor, and the distant reader about Cambridge wishes gain an impression of Cambridge as well as to have at hand a statistical reference regarding e city and its people. It is the publisher's aim to portray as much of Cambridge's charm and reatness as is consistent with facts. We believe with John Cotton Dana, the great librarian, at "Good citizenship springs from a knowledge about one's own community." The teach- gs of the City Map and the City Directory about localities, districts, street locations, street anges, growth of sections, and general city changes are of great importance to property wners, old residents, new residents, and school students. Racial characteristics of names in e Directory enable the consultant to gain a very comprehensive knowledge of the inhabitants : the city and many other educational facts. Notable men all through history have contri- uted their philosophy on the value of knowledge about the "home town." Here is one om Abraham Lincoln: "I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like to e a man live so that his place will be proud of him." In studying the following, remember at the Cambridge City Directory disseminates this information far and wide where this irectory represents Cambridge in the Free Directory Library Exchange System of North merica. The Cambridge City Directory, with over 1,000 closely printed pages, is the City of ambridge in book form; its family and social life, business and industrial life, is portrayed in eat detail. The publishers invite and accept constructive criticism and suggestions for the nprovement of the Directory for the benefit of Cambridge and all interested.
