from Coventry by the premition of the Chh of Christ there under the pastoral Care of Eld'r Peter Werden to which they as members did belong, haveing Retained their Unity with One another it Appeared that the Church In her Unity was Begun. the same day Recived Jonathan and Mary Richardson upon a Letter of Recomenda - tion from there Bretheren at Newton.
P 2 Likewise Inquired into the Standing of Eld'r Werden with Regard to his Standing with his Bretheren at Coventry we was Informed by Deacon Joseph Bucklen of Coventry and by a Letter Certifying the State of the Case.
The Letter is as followeth A Short Naritive of Facts Relating the State of Religion with the people and Pastor of the Church of Christ in Coventry of the Baptist Denomination We take this Method to Inform that our Eld'rPeter Werden has Laboured with us in the gospel Constantly For this twelve years past. And sume part of the time successfully. Our Beginnings was but small: The Lord Blessed us with a happy Increas: So that we was a few years ago a flourishing people in the Cause of truth. But Since that the Lord has been pleased to Remove A number of the Brotherhood by Death. A Considerable Number more of the more Compact part of the Church have Removed themselves and Families into Other parts of this Country, Some others have Relinquished the Cause and people they Once profesed Unity with.
3 The few that Remain for want of Unity among themselves Have thought Best to Desist Their Publick attendance on the Ordinance of the Lords Supper at Presant.
Our Elder has all the time Been some what Low as to his Outward Surcomstances, his time much taken up in Publick Labour, his familey some what Numerous so that Notwithstanding his Exercise at times at hand Labour, and the Generous Comnumication of friends and breathern to his support yet he has been Obliged for the Subsistance of his familey to Involve himself. As we Belive wariors should not be Intangled with the affairs of this Life. We have Laboured for Sume months past to see if we might in unity free our

Eld'r from those Intanglements: But we have Laboured without success Upon a Deliberate Consideration of the above facts we Cannot think it is agreable to truth to Require the Servise of our Eld'r in the Relation of a pastor any Longer. At the same time we freely assert that for the time he has been with us that as a pastor and breathen he has given Evidence of the Truth of his profession in Love to god and man: Coventry May 27th A.D. 1769
P 4 Signed Severally by the Eld'r and breathren, Joseph Buklin Deacon Peter Werden Eld'r Thomas Matteson Obediah Johnson Thomas Stafford Hazekiah Hammond. The above and within is a true Coppey Red and Compaired by me Thomas Matteson Ch Clarke.
Upon Consulting this Letter and the Testimony of Deacon Bucklen In Agreement thereto the Church was fully Satisfied with the Caracter of the Elder: And those Bretheren that came from Coventry Finding the Bretheren or Church at Coventry to Relinquish their Claim to the Elder Insisted that their former Relation with the Elder was not Dissolved and therefore Requested his Services as heretofore, the other Bretheren that had Joyned them frely Requested the Eld'r to Come and Serve the Church of Christ in New-providence In the Capassity of an Elder. The present Inhabitants very Generealy Joynd their Request. Eld'r Werden after Deliberate Consideration Chearfully Complyed with the Churches Request accordingly In March Following Came to the Church and

At a Chh Meeting Consulting our Duty In Regard to the Relief of our Breathern that may Be Distresed for want of Daily Sustance we Freely Acknowledge it to be our Duty to Relive our Bretheren according to our Ability and find it most agreable to our presant views of truth to Communicate of our Carnal things to Answer that End. to Attend Chh Meetings when Repetedly Requested by the Chh, is Very Greavious and Offencive to us. We are Likewise Informed that your Conversation is so far from what becomes the Gospel, that it is both Revileing and Prophain. We wish you to Consider as in the preasents of the great god Wheather that Sentance of the Apostel Jude may not be Applied to your Case, these are they who seperate themselves Sensual having not the Spirit Jude 19. be not Decevied god is not Mocked Whatsoever a man sows the same Shall he reape. P 13 The Chh of Christ In Adams to William Hanks of Windsor, Once profesing Feloship In the gospil with us Sendeth Wishing you grace to Love the truth and peace. Our Very Dear Brother We Rec'd the Leters Directed from you to us. In the first of which you Aledged Several very greveus things against us. As that of Agreaing together to git Liquor to make men drunk in order to Inlist them. By that means when Staiped of their Right Mind, and so Insnared your Sun that we are Virtually gilty of his Blood. A Horrid Sean. And then testifieing
that this is not doing as we wood that others should do to us. Supposing the fact to be true. we Could Hartily Say as you do. But as we Have not the Least Conciousness of any such Desine Nor the Least proof afforded by your Self or
Others of the facts Alledged by you. We Conclude that we ought to be Asteemed By you and all manCind Innosent In the Afair. But as you have Adventrued both Rashly and Falsly to Accuse us of Crimes of the Depest Dye, And upon this have withdrawn from us. We pray you to Consider wheather this is doing as you would be done by. Whether you have so loved (? R. H. C. ) Christ If so be that you have Tasted that he is gracecious Or wheather this is giving None Offence Neither to Jew or gentile nor the Chh of god. We hartily wish you to have a clear view of what you have Done to the Caws of god, of what you have done to the brotherhood, And that your Repentance and Return might gladen the hearts you have greaved.

P 14 In the other Leter you have Determined that the Breatherin to be given up to Idolatry from the Instance of Mr. Hancocks welcom to Boston. And Refer us to Christ Riding into Jerusalem We Wood Observe for your Information that as Christ Asumes no other kingdom but what was not of this world. He Asumed no honers but what was Divine. And had the peopel Adore (? R. H. C. ) the same to Any other person as they did to him and in what they did Ascribeing Divine Honour, they would have hin guilty of Idolitry. but the Same god that has Commanded Divine Honours to himself has Commanded us to honour those Kings Magestrates governors and Rulers that are set up for the good of Society. Hence when Men of Carrecter in Sivil Societie are Respected and honoured as such we Neither Consider It Babbalion Nor Idolitry.
On A Lementabel view of your presant Case. In the Name of Christ we Admonish you to Repent of the sins you have Comited Against the Brotherhod, and that you Return as a peacebel member of the Church of Christ. Dening Feloship with you until the fruit of Repentance Becomes Evident
