ANNUAL TOWN MEETING, MARCH 6, 1893.
ARTICLE 1. To choose a moderator to preside at said meeting.
S. K. Hamilton was elected moderator.
ART. 2. To act upon the acceptance of the reports of town officers as printed.
VOTED. That the reports of town officers be accepted as printed.
ART. 3. To bring in their votes on one ballot for Town Clerk, Town Treasurer, three Selectmen, three Asses- sors, three Overseers of the Poor, one Road Commis- sioner, for a term of three years ; a Collector of Taxes, three Park Commissioners, a Board of Health, consisting of three members ; three Trustees of the Town Library for a term of three years ; two members of the School Committee for a term of three years ; a Fish Committee, consisting of three members, three Constables, three Fence Viewers, and three Auditors. Also to bring in their votes in answer to the question " Shall licenses be granted for the sale of intoxicating liquors in this town ?" The words Yes and No in answer to that question to constitute the form of such ballot.

Upon a separate ballot " for the use of women quali- fied according to law to vote for members of the School Committee," to bring in their votes for two members of the School Committee for a term of three years; these . ballots will be received at the same time and in the same box. The polls will be kept open four hours at least and for such longer time as the voters may by vote direct.

Chairman declared polls open for reception of ballots for town officers. The ballot registered 0000.
VOTED. To take up article 5.
ART. 5. To see if the town will authorize its treasurer to hire money to pay all demands in anticipation of taxes. VOTED. That the Town Treasurer be authorized with the approval of the Selectmen to hire money in anticipation of the taxes of the current municipal year, and to issue notes of the town therefor, and all debts so incurred shall be paid from said taxes.
VOTED. That all town business except the election of town officers be adjourned until next Tuesday evening at 7.30 o'clock.
VOTED. That the polls be kept open until 5.30 P. M., and at that time they be closed.
At 5.30 P. M., the polls were declared closed, the register showing 1177 ballots cast. The ballot box

failed to register correctly as the list of voters showed 957 names checked on the list, and there were 957 bal- lots cast.
The ballots were sorted and counted, and public decla- ration of the result of the ballots made in open town meeting.
Twenty-nine women voted.

To raise and appropriate money for the following purposes, to wit : For payment of town debt and inter- est, for school purposes, support of the poor, repairs of highways and bridges, and determine how the same shall be expended ; fire department, public library, and reading room, salaries of town officers, care of street lamps and the lighting of streets, town house ex- penses, miscellaneous expenses, annual rental of hy- . drants, police department, and common and park improvement, and all other necessary town charges.
VOTED. That the sum of $2,500 be raised and appropriated for the payment of the town debt, and that the sum of $4,500 be raised and appropriated for interest on loans. The following amounts were raised and appropriated :
For school general fund, $21,750. For school contingent fund, $1000. For school text books and supplies, $1,250. For support of the poor, $5,000, and income from town farm.

For Highways and Bridges, $5,000.
For Fire Department, $2,900; $300 of which to be expended under the direction of the Forest Fire Wards.
For Public Library, $300 and income from dog tax.
For Public Reading Room, $175.
For salaries of Town Officers, $2,775, divided in ac- cordance with recommendations of the Appropri- ation Committee, as follows :

Art. 20. To see if the town will make an appropriation for the continuation of the sidewalk and Main street im- provement at Lakeside, or what they will do about it.
Voted. $1,000.
Voted. That the hauling of gravel aad building of wall be let out to lowest responsible bidder.
Art. 29. To see if the town will make an appropriation of two hundred and fifty dollars for draining Elm street and Elm square on to the Boston and Maine Railroad, or what they will do about it.

provided George E. Smith will give a right of way over the land to the railroad. The report was amended.
Voted. $250, and any money unexpended be devoted to cleaning out the bridge on Elm street.
Art. 30. To see if the town will complete the sidewalk on the southerly side of Byron street from land of J. W. Wellman to Albion street, and raise and appropriate money for the same.
Voted. To indefinitely postpone.
Art. 31. To see if the town will raise and appropriate the sum of two hundred dollars to enlarge and rebuild the culvert on Lake street, or what they will do about it.
Voted. To indefinitely postpone.
Art. 44. To see if the town will raise and appropriate money to pay Christiana Anderson and Josiah Laybolt amounts awarded them by the County Commissioners for damages received in the widening of Water street.
Voted. To refer to the Selectmen with instructions to see if the County Commissioners will assume one half the expense.
Art. 52. To see if the town will raise and appropriate the sum of two hundred dollars for the purpose of grading, building and concreting the northerly side of Water street from Miller's Piano factory to the railroad cross- ing near Centre depot, and also build a sand catcher thereon, or what they will do about it.
Voted. To refer this article to the Road Commissioners.
Art. 55. To see if the town will raise and appropriate money to complete Spring street in compliance with the order of the County Commissioners.

Art. 68. To see if the town will raise and appropriate fif- teen dollars to pay for having a railing built on the north side of Salem street, between George M. Leavens' and George W. Oliver's houses.

That the Road Commissioners be requested, in making up their annual report to the town, to give the total amounts of all the appropriations, both general and special, expended during the year under their direction, and giving the name and amount paid to individuals for labor, the survey bills, and the amount unexpended or overdrawn.
Voted. $2,000 for macadamizing Main street, and that the crushed stone used be produced by the town crusher.

Voted. That the compensation of the Road Commissioners be $2.50 per day while superintending the work on highways, and that only one Commissioner be paid that sum at the same time.

Voted. That the sum of $2,200, in addition to the amount already appropriated, be raised and appropriated for the rental of hydrants.
Article 13. To see if the town will raise and appropriate two hundred dollars for the purposes of Memorial Day. · "Voted. $200.

Art. 15. To see what action the town will take in reference to unpaid concrete bills of former years, now due the town from various individuals.
Voted. That the Selectmen be fully authorized to collect all unpaid concrete bills, by process of law, or compro- mise the same in such manner as may seem to them just and equitable.
Art. 16. To see if the town will authorize the School Com- mittee to employ a Superintendent of Schools, and raise and appropriate money therefor.
Voted. To do so, and $1,000.
Motion to reconsider was lost.
Voted. To take up article 70.
Art. 70. To see if the town will instruct its Selectmen to oppose before the Legislative Committee on water sup- ply and drainage, the granting of the right to take the waters of the Saugus river to any other party than the town of Wakefield, or what they will do about it.
E. C. Miller offered the following resolution which was accepted and passed by the town, viz :- " Whereas the inhabitants of the towns of Wakefield and Stoneham will need an additional water supply in the immediate future, be it
Resolved, in town meeting assembled, that the Select- men of Wakefield be requested to respectfully present the remonstrance of the inhabitants of Wakefield to the Legislature, against the granting of increased privileges within the territory of this town, to the city of Lynn for purposes of water supply which shall in any way deprive this town and the neighboring town of Stone- ham from obtaining a future water supply in the valley of the Saugus river above the village of Montrose."
Voted. To take up article 71.

Art. 71. To see if the town will instruct its Selectmen to petition the Legislature to grant this town the right to take the waters of the Saugus river for a water supply, or what they will do about it.
Voted. To indefinitely postpone.
Committee on articles 19, 21, 47, 61, 62, 63, 64 and 65 reported, viz. :
Art. 19. To see if the town will appropriate the sum of fifty dollars for the purchase of Johnson pumps to sup- ply a need in some of the districts, or what they will do about it.
Committee recommend indefinite postponement.
Voted. To do so.
Art. 21. To see if the town will locate a fire alarm box at the corner of Melvin and Bennett streets, and appropri- ate money therefor.
Art. 61. To see if the town will cause a fire alarm box to be located at or near the corner of Water street and Newhall court, and appropriate money therefor.
Committee acted upon the above two articles together and recommended that the town raise and appropriate the sum of $250 to provide fire alarms as called for. Voted. To appropriate $250.
Art. 47. To see if the town will place a hydrant near the junction of Byron and Gould streets, or what they will do about it.
Committee recommended indefinite postponement. Voted. To do so.
Art. 62. To see if the town will cause a hydrant to be lo- cated at or near the corner of Water street and Newhall court, and appropriate money therefor.
