DAVITT, REV. WILLIAM F. Chaplain. Holyoke. Entered service Sept., 1917, with rank of 1st lieutenant, serving with 125th infantry. On Aug. 6, 1918, during operations along the Vesle River, learning that 40 Americans were cut off in a ravine, he called for volunteers and led a rescuing party through a hail of machine-gun bullets. The party rescued every one of the wounded men, and not a member of the rescuing party was hit. Cited for gallantry and meritorious conduct. Killed Nov.

Reverend William F. Dabitt


Native of Holyoke, zealous priest of our diocese, who did the Master's work in Westboro, Worcester and Lenox; volunteered for chaplain duty in the World War in 1917; cited for bravery in 1918 when, amid a rain of machine-gun bullets, he volunteered and led a successful sortie to rescue forty wounded soldiers; received the Distinguished Service Cross; was the last enlisted officer to make the supreme sacrifice - fell on Armistice Day morning, 1918. Worcester preserves his honored name in the title of a public square, Lenox lovingly placed a memorial tablet in St. Ann's Church, whence he answered the call to the colors, and her K. of C. council adopted his name. His native State honors his memory with a bronze memorial in the State House at Boston.

Awarded distinguished service medal for aggressive action in times of emergency, for his marked ability in hospital management and his material contributions in saving the lives of many wounded.


DOYLE, WILLIAM. Sergeant. Holyoke. With Co. D. 104th infantry, in command of platoon at Chateau-Thierry, was ordered to put enemy machine gun out of action. In advance against heavy fire, two of his men being killed, single-handed took six prisoners hiding in shell- hole. When balance of men arrived, advanced to gun, shielding themselves behind prisoners, capturing gun and its crew. Distinguished service cross.

FOLEY, THOMAS F. Captain. Born at Worcester and en- listed there. With 101st infantry, 26th division, near Vaux, July 15-22, 1918, led battalion with exceptional bravery and judgment. Encountering strong resistance, personally went forward and reconnoitered under ma- chine-gun fire and led his command in successful attacks. Distinguished service cross.


GRAVELINE, FRED C. Sergeant, 1st Class. 20th aero squadron. Born at West Warren ; enlisted at Cleveland, O.
