* Compiled September 12, 1931.

EARLY Italian work on hand-tooled bindings in leather was remarkable for excellence of design and technical skill, from the fifteenth century to the seventeenth. While many of the fine examples of Italian heraldic bindings still in existence, were made for one or another of the great Italian families, the most beautiful were made for digni- taries of the Church.

Our cover design is a copy of the cover used on the folio edition of Soriano's Masses. a unique specimen of the highest development of the book- binder's art of this period. It is dedicated to Pope Pius V, a lover of art, who made Rome a much more beautiful city during his short reign on the Throne of Peter. Among other works he added to the city many beautiful fountains and finished the front of St. Peter's, on which in many places, his coat-of-arms can be seen.

The cover is from the workshop of the Berkshire Embossing and Finishing Company, of Pittsfield, a recent addition to the business enterprises of Western Massachusetts. The engraving on the front and back end-papers, showing Brightside, Ingleside and Mont Marie, is by the Springfield Photo Engraving Company and is a reproduction of an unusual photograph by Woodhead of Spring- field.

We are indebted to the Bachrach Studios for many of the distinctive photographs of individuals shown in this book.

HE various sections of this chronicle began to go to press six months or more before the appear- ance of the present volume. Hence, an occasional statement in the course of the narrative, true at the time of writing, would call for modification at present.
