IN 1884 James A. and John B.
McDermott started in the construction business in Worcester, Mass. Their first contract was a store and tenement in Cherry Valley for Matthew McDermott. The next contract was a house on Vernon Street, Worcester, which later became the rectory for the Church of the Ascension Parish and which was recently torn down to make room for the new rectory.

The firm, still growing, did a great amount of church work in the large parish of St. John's, Worcester, over which Monsignor Griffin was pastor for a number of years.
In 1890 the contract for St. Ann's new rectory on Eastern Ave- nue was started for Rev. Denis Scannell, also the finishing of the then new church.

As noiseless as the good old icebox and less expensive, too
W HY put up with old-fashioned re- frigeration when the very newest, finest automatic kind costs but 4 to 7 cents a day to operate? Even for the very larg- est size, 10 cents is the extreme limit. And right from the first you have perfect automatic cold-cold that never stops and starts, that varies scarcely at all from the ideal temperature, for there's not one mov- ing part in this refrigerator, not a speck of machinery, not a whisper of sound-noth- ing to wear out as long as you live. Just a tiny gas flame and a trickle of water do all the work, take the place of moving mechanism and afford this wonderful con- venience and economy.
Only a few dollars down will deliver a brand new Electrolux Gas Refrigerator to your home, with the balance in convenient monthly payments. See them today!

THE LATEST ENGINEERING ACHIEVEMENT
Here is the new Gilbert & Barker Flexible Flame Oil Burner. Notice how compact it is! It looks as efficient as it is! No part inside the fire-box to be affected by the heat.
THE C &B MAXIMUM RADIATION FLAME
Here is a broad flat softly luminous "flexible flame" that gives you most heat radiation- which is what your boiler wants.
G & B COMBUSTION HEAD
Here is the "combustion head" which enables one model of this new burner to adapt itself to any size house and which shapes the flame to the fire-box so none of the heat ie wasted.
LOWER FUEL BILLS
Here is the tank wagon that doesn't have to call so often when you have a burner that gets the most heat out of the least oil. It brings you the lower-priced "fuel oil" when it does call.
PERMANENT TROUBLE-FREE HEAT
from the Perfected Oil Burner
Two things you need if you are going to get oil burner satisfaction. One-A good burner. Two-Constant, sure, expert service for that burner, if it should ever need it.
In the Gilbert & Barker FLEXIBLE FLAME OIL BURNER both are provided in the fullest measure. Installed only by the most relia- ble and experienced dealers in each community, whose expert service is always available, and backed by a New England institution of the size and permanence of the Gilbert & Barker Manufacturing Company- your investment in a FLEXIBLE FLAME OIL BURNER will provide a permanent source of trouble-free oil heat.
A Perfected, Long-Lived Burner
Into the FLEXIBLE FLAME OIL BURNER has been packed every desirable feature that forty years' experience in burning oil says should be in it. To save you money, it is built to use low-cost fuel and do without the costly pilot light. To give you more heat per gallon a new combustion head was designed that burns every drop of oil with a flat, rolling flame of maximum radiant heat value.
The FLEXIBLE FLAME Burner is an extremely quiet one-free from all hum and roar. There's even a "filterette" that prevents radio interference.
It is the ideal burner for homes, schools, churches, institutions or wherever dependable, automatic oil heat is desired. Any dealer listed below will be glad to demonstrate the Gilbert & Barker oil burner to you and give you complete information on its installation.

Gentlemen :
In reply to your request for our experience with your Hot Water Heating System by forced circuletion in our old end new buildings the past season, and the comparison of cool consump- tion before and after the change, re are pleased to give you the following information.
Our old buildings were heated by a steam system which while fairly actisfactory, did not give us an even and uniform temper- sture thruout all the buildings.
The new addition which we built in the summer of 1929 a little more than doubled the size of our institution. Your system of Hot Water Heating, which you installed thruout the old and new. buildings, has rorked very satisfactorily and has given us an even, uniform temperature.
We have also noticed that the quality of the air seems better than formerly; it does not seem as dry. In this respect the Hot Tater heat 16 superior to the steam heat and is particularly agreeable to the occupants of our institution who are mostly elderly people, more inclined to throat and bronchial silmente than are younger people. The temperature runs much more evenly than with the ateam system.
Regarding the fuel consumption our records show that during the heating season of 1928-1929, before the addition was built, our total coal bill was {2625.00. The season of 1929-1930 our total fuel bill, including the electricity for the circulating pump, w26 $2615.13.
We are very pleased with this shoring as you can see that although we have more than doubled the size of our institution we have not increased the cost of heating. We are very grateful to M'r. O. E. Nault and to you for bringing this system to our attention.
Very truly yours, Little Franciscan Sisters of Inry, By whichway of the Dice Han diferir

FITCHBURG, MASS.
The Jennison Company was established in Fitchburg in 1885 by H. E. Jennison and J. H. Mack. At that time its activities were confined to the local community where they did a local plumbing and heating business.
In June, 1892, its present President, W. H. Dolan, Sr., entered the employ of the Company as a plumber's apprentice. He rose steadily until in 1900 he was taken in as a partner in the concern. In 1923 Mr. Dolan purchased his partner's interest and incor- porated the Company, his son, W. H. Dolan, Jr., now being associated with him.
The Jennison Company has shown a steady growth under the guidance of Mr. Dolan. They have expanded from a small local concern to one whose activi- ties are now extended over all of New England and the Middle States and as far west as Michigan, Ohio, and Ken- tucky. They are recog- nized authorities on hot water heating by forced circulation.

JAMES FITTON
First Catholic Priest of Wor- cester. He laid the foundation for the College of the Holy Cross.
Father James Fitton, born in 1803, was for many years a New England Missionary and Priest. When the Right Reverend Benedict Joseph Fenwick founded the College of the Holy Cross, he had a substantial foundation on which to build, for Father Fitton during his early days in Worcester had purchased a tract of land on Pakachoag or Hill of Pleasant Springs-which today is the College of the Holy Cross, the largest Catholic College in New England.
In 1827 Father Fitton was ordained priest. He endured the hardships of the pioneer, travelling hundreds of miles to hold services in remote settlements. It was in 1835 that Father Fitton was sent to Worcester, where he celebrated the first Mass in the shop of a mechanic of the town-he preached his first sermon in the Old Elephant Tavern, then on the stage route between Boston and Springfield. The later events of Father Fitton's life brought to him much of accom- plishment and honor.
BARNARD, SUMNER & PUTNAM CO. grew through those pioneering days-until today it stands an insti- tution 100 years old with an enviable record for honest merchandising and friendly service.
