The Beauty of Brick

NOT all who take pride in the charm and distinction of our Catholic Churches. Schools, Institutions, private homes and other buildings, realize how fortunate we are in having right at our door- step a brick manufacturer who has had a greater influ- ence on the brick-making industry than the combined influence of countless gene- rations that went before.

Brick-making is so an- cient as an industry that to record the first use of brick for buildings, you must go back to the dawn of history. The oldest structure of Egypt, the ruins of Ur, destroyed 2000 B. C., the walls of Ancient Babylon, the Great Wall of China are examples of the antiquity of brick-making. It is therefore remarkable that down through the centuries, past the middle ages, through the Renaissance, even to the middle of the last century, no note- worthy forward step in brick-making took place. Even today much of the brick in use finds its prototype in the houses built during the days immediately following the settlement of America. It is interesting to note in pass- ing that while many of the old houses had walls of brick, these walls were covered with wooden shingles or clapboards. How different it is when the owner of a brick house is dis- tinguished from his fellows today and envied by them. And, that this is due to the amazing advance in the art of brick-making, is unques- tionably true.

One advance after another has been pio- neered by the brick-maker referred to above, Fiske & Company of Boston. Established in

The beautiful colors of Fiske "Tapestry" brick give this attractive residence unfading charm

THE NEW WALDORF-ASTORIA HOTEL NEW YORK CITY Fiske "Waldorf Grays" are used in this famous hotel, for which they were originated

1864, this progressive con- cern has constantly striven to make brick and kindred materials more beautiful, more durable and more artis- tic. Of the many kinds of high-grade brick which this Company makes, there is none which more clearly re- flects its success in this direc- tion than "Tapestry" brick, undoubtedly the most fa- mous brick in the world. "Tapestry" brick derives its color from nature. There is no artificial coloring what- ever. In the clays and shales of the remarkable deposits in Pennsylvania, controlled by Fiske, the marvelous colors char- acterizing Fiske Brick were blended a million years before the dawn of history. Under the skillful manipulation of the brick- makers' art, both in the pains- taking selection of clay and shale and the expert firing, those hidden colors spring to a new life in the brick kiln, to remain as imperishable as the everlasting hills, as beautiful as the elusive lines of a "Turner Sunset."

"Tapestry" brick has never been successfully imitated nor its leadership successfully challenged. No other brick manufacturer can call his product Tapestry Brick. The name "Tapestry" is amply pro- tected by trademark and even more protected by the harmony and warmth of color which makes it impos- sible for other brick-makers to duplicate "Tapestry" by artificial colors.

We repeat that we are indeed fortunate in having the makers of "Tapestry" and other Fiske Brick, so close at hand. Catho- lic buildings pay no premium for using the most beautiful brick that is made. Dealers who can supply this brick are found in every locality. The main office of Fiske & Company, 18 Newbury Street. Boston. is conveni- ently located in New England's great Catholic center and is ready at all times to co-operate with architects in select- ing the brick best suited for their needs, or developing new effects in brick- work.

N 1873 Henry G. Keasbey and Richard V. Mattison, M.D., began the manufacture of various chemicals and pharmaceutical products in Philadelphia. The partners were able to build up a profitable business. As time went on, the partners decided to specialize on ... carbonate of magnesia in its various medicinal forms. As Mont- gomery County provides some of the finest dolomite deposit from which magnesia is obtained, Ambler was selected as the location of the plant. ( In order to assure itself an adequate supply of car- bonate of magnesia, the firm developed sources of raw materials and carried the dolomite through to its refined form. As a matter of good business, new markets for magnesia were sought in an effort to add to the already excellent demand from the pharmaceutical trade. ([ In the early 80's it was discovered that one of the firm's customers pur- chased as much as a ton of magnesia at a time. That was a tremendous amount for that day. The purchaser, it was learned, was salvaging hemp rope from the docks of Philadelphia. After cutting it into a fibrous mass, he mixed it with carbonate of magnesia to form an insulating covering for boilers and steam pipes. Dr. Mattison immediately grasped the possibilities of the idea and arranged with the originator to assist in further development. [[ Experiments showed the need for a more fire resisting fiber than hemp, and Dr. Mattison turned his attention to asbestos. It was only a short step to the purchase of the famous Bell Asbestos Mines at Thetford, P. Q., Canada, assuring the company of an unlimited supply of silky fibered chrysotile asbestos. [[ The tests also led to the forming of "85 percent magnesia," as the best combination for coverings, which percentage has since been adopted by the entire industry as the most adequate. [It was but another step for Dr. Mattison to develop the use of asbestos in roofing material, wall material, asbestos cloth and paper, brake linings and clutch facings. Thousands of theaters have been made more safe because of the use of Ambler Safety Curtains of asbestos. [ Other building materials produced include sound absorbing plaster, asbestos school building plaster, ebonized lumber for electrical work, asbestos lumber and fire-proof wall or siding paper.

Mr. Keasbey retired several years ago, selling his interest to Dr. Mattison. Today Dr. Mattison nears his 79th birthday, yet maintains a close contact with the business.

"TOILET SEATS FOR BETTER BUILDINGS"

The Perfect Heating Comfort for Churches, Schools, Rectories and All Other Buildings

AMERICAN RADIATOR HEATING is the first choice of architects and builders for schools, churches, rectories and all other buildings because of its proved dependability for over forty years. The name is your guarantee-if it's an All-American heating system, it's all right.

And now is the time to look to your heating, lest the falling mercury catch you unawares. No school or church work can run smoothly and successfully unless the heating system does its work well. An antiquated system may result in unsatisfactory heating service-extravagant fuel consumption, slow heating, inad- equate warmth on cold days, and the escape of smoke and dirt. If you have such an old outfit, it will pay you to install a new American Radiator Heating plant. But make sure now that you're ready for cold weather.

CONVENIENT PAYMENTS

You can modernize any building with American Radiator Heating on convenient monthly payments spread over two years. And new low prices are now in effect to make the purchase doubly easy. It's more than a wise purchase-it's a good investment; for it's so much inbuilt value in any building, and guaran- tees maximum fuel economy, minimum caretakinė, convenience, comfort and health.

A. H. PHILLIPS, INC. Springfield's Chain Store Grocer

STARTING hardly in his teens as order boy for a Boston wholesale grocer, at the menial pay of $2.00 per week for long hard hours, A. H. Phillips advanced in the wholesale grocery business to the rank of a salesman on the road, a very cherished position to obtain in those days. It was while traveling and selling the store owner of thirty years ago, acquiring a knowledge of the way business was conducted by him, that Mr. Phillips conceived the idea of opening chain stores of his own and conducting a strictly cash and carry business.

His first store, known as the Standard Tea & Coffee Co., was opened in 1900 at South Main Street, near State Street, in Springfield. A short time later, the second one became a reality at 141/2 North Main Street, which store is now known as our 2212 Main Street store.

As Mr. Phillips continued to expand by opening new stores, the necessity for a storehouse became imperative and a small one was opened on Bridge Street on the site of the present Broadway Theater. The chain soon outgrew this storehouse and in 1912 the present warehouse and office building on Napier Street and the B. & A. railroad was opened to serve the 69 stores then in operation. The purchase of the Napier stores in Hartford by Mr. Phillips increased the number of stores to 89 units. On April 1, 1917, the company was incorporated. The growth to two hundred units has been a normal, natural growth, stores being added from profits from the business, without any outside capital. This feature of a natural growth, free from stock issues, is quite unique in itself. Today A. H. Phillips, Inc. stores serve Springfield and vicinity with the most modern, up-to-date merchandising methods.
