Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Newburyport as follows:
That An Ordinance Entitled An Ordinance To Establish The Term of Office Of The Superintendent of Highways Be It Enacted By The City Council As Follows, dated July 2,1945
Section 1 That the term of Office of the Superintendent of Highways shall be for a term of three years, said term to begin January 1946, be amended to read as follows:
The Mayor, subject to the approval of the City Council, shall appoint annually, in the month of January, a per- son qualified by training and experience to be superin- tendent of streets and sewers, to serve until his sue- cessor is appointed and qualified. He shall have all
the powers, perform the duties and be subject to the liabilities and penalties of surveyors of highways and road commissioners. He shall receive such compensation for his services as the Mayor and City Council may deter- mine.

Section 1 Chapter 21, said ordinance entitled "Chief of the Fire Department" is hereby amended, this with reference to the tenure of office of the Chief of the Fire Depart- ment and as amended, shall read as follows :
By the addition known as Section 2, said section shall read- The term of office of the Chief of the Fire De- partment and the Assistant Chief shall be for a term of three years, said amendment to take effect January 1946, be amended to read as follows:

An Ordinance Entitled Assistant Director of Veteran Services and Defining The Duties Thereof.
Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Newburyport as follows:
Section 1 Once each year, the Mayor shall appoint, subject to confirmation by the City Council, a competent per- son to be Assistant Director of Veterans Services, who shall hold office for one year, or until his successor is chosen and qualified in like manner. He may be removed for cause at any time by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council.
Section 2 He shall assist veterans with completing applica- tions for Pensions for disability not the result of service in the active service in the active military or naval forces of the United States.
Section 3 He shall assist in the notarizing and compiling of various types of affidavits in regard to vet- erans' claims.
Section 4 He shall assist in the executing of applications for Pension and Compensation by widows and chil- dren of deceased veterans; obtaining proof of death, proof of widowhood and proof of age and relationship of children.
Section 5 He shall assist in the compiling and completing of applications for compensation by a dependent parent of a veteran who died of a disease or in- jury due to service in the active military or naval forces of the United States and the compil- ing of proof of relationship of natural or adop- tive mother or father of veterans.

Section 6 Assist in the execution of applications of persons who bore expense of last sickness and burial, for reimburse- ment from accrued amounts due a deceased beneficiary of the Veterans Administration; compile evidence in support of this claim.
Section 7 Execute application for burial allowance for deceased veterans and determing who is eligible to file for same.
Section 8 He shall assist veterans in filing application for com- pensation for disability resulting from service in the active service in the military or naval forces of the United States; compiling affidavits and statements for same.
Section 9 Shall assist veterans' widows or children in applying for accrued benefits due deceased veterans.
Section 10 Shall assist veterans in notarizing and completing dec- larations as to their marital status and affidavits of dependency; assist veterans in obtaining hospitalisation and domiciliary care; in obtaining out-patient medical and dental treatments; assist Disabled Veterans in ap- plying for Vocational Rehabilitation; aid in placing veterans in obtaining employment and filing affidavits with the Veterans Administration.
