dition. The teacher, Miss Christiana Upham, deserves credit also for her care of the desks and the new building.
The principle already established in our Primary Schools, of thoroughness and great care in the earlier training of pupils, needs to be yet more faithfully applied and carried out in every one of them. Whatever is done in them, be it more or be it less, should be done rightly ; and then it will be easier to go on in this way, as the pupils ascend in their studies and to higher schools, where, certainly, the principle should not be relaxed.
The Committee would bring anew to the notice of parents the matter of irregularity of attendance at school. Are they aware that, owing to absences, tardiness, and the practice with not a few, of giving their children permission to be dismissed from school before the regular hour, probably one third of the funds expended and advantages afforded is lost to the town ! To that sad conclusion do the registers of the schools and tables lying at hand seem to force us.
The attendance upon the recent examinations, on the part of parents and others, proves the hold that our Public Schools have upon the community ; but this regard for them should be shown in more numerous visits to them at other times, and in a closer and more friendly co-operation with the teachers in government and general management. The people of Mel- rose deem these Schools the largest and richest town interest they have, and they will thus treat it.
All of which is respectfully submitted.
ALEXANDER J. SESSIONS, School WALTER LITTLEFIELD, JR.,
CALEB HOWARD, Committee.
