REPORT OF THE TOWN CLERK.
Memorial Services
In honor of our late President, JAMES ABRAM GARFIELD, were held by the citizens of the Town of Melrose, under the auspices of the Selectmen, in the Town Hall, on Monday, September 26, A. D. 1881, at 2, P. M. At the close of the exercises the following reso- lutions were unanimously adopted : -
Whereas, God, in his over-ruling wisdom, has taken to himself our great and noble President, grief burdens the heart of the nation ; sorrow reigns profound ; all classes and conditions of men feel the irreparable loss ; " a heroic life has been crowned with a martyr's death ;" the citizens of Melrose, in Town Hall assembled, in accordance with National and State proclamation, under the shadow of this deep affliction, in common with all the people throughout the length and breadth of the land, while consecrating themselves to their Almighty Father and seeking consolation from this dispensation, bow in humble submission to the Divine will ; and it is hereby
Resolved, That in the death of James Abram Garfield, whose patient and uncomplaining struggle for life has endeared his mem- ory to all mankind, the country loses a most devoted servant ; a scholar of superior intellect ; a true statesman ; a devout patriot ; a thorough, unostentatious Christian ; a tender, generous, pure- hearted man, alike renowned in civil and military achievements ; one whose honesty and integrity of purpose the people recognized, and in whom they trusted ; whose life in public and private was beyond reproach ; whose relations as son, husband, father, friend, are a worthy example to the "manhood of the future"; and of whom we can most truly say : "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord; yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors ; and their works do follow them."
Resolved, That in the life of our late President the world has a model worthy of emulation for all coming time. When we remem- ber his career from boyhood to manhood, - from the log-cabin to the White House ; his filial love ; his exemplification of the true home in all its relations ; his quiet, unobtrusive Christian life ; the

straightforward, fearless, manly public service, we realize more keenly our great national calamity. Every heart and home in Melrose is saddened by the stroke, and will ever tenderly cherish, reverence, and love the memory of so great and good a man ; and we never shall forget that he
" Hath borne his faculties so meek, hath been So clear in his great office, that his virtues Will plead like angels, trumpet-tongued, against The deep damnation of his taking-off."
Resolved, That in this hour of deep distress, as the bells of the nation are tolling a mournful requiem, we sympathize most sin- cerely and heartily with the bereaved widow, the fatherless chil- dren, the aged mother, and commend them to the tender care of an inscrutable but all-wise God, who rules over us all and in whose hands we are.
Voted, That the above resolutions be entered in the records of the Town, and a copy of the same transmitted to Mrs. Lucretia R. Garfield.
A copy of the resolutions was forwarded to Mrs. Garfield, and the following letter received : -
CLEVELAND, O., December 6, 1881. Mr. JOHN LARRABEE, Town Clerk, Melrose, Mass.
DEAR SIR, - Mrs. Garfield directs me; on behalf of her family and her- self, to return her sincere thanks for the resolutions, received at your hands, of the citizens of Melrose.
Very truly yours,
C. O. ROCKWELL.
