The following facts taken from the Town Records, are deemed of sufficient interest to warrant their publication: -
The Town of Melrose was incorporated May 3, 1850. .
The Act of Incorporation was signed by Governor George N. Briggs, also by Marshall P. Wilder, President of the Senate, and Ensign N. Kellogg, Speaker of the House.
The first warrant for a Town meeting dated May 6, 1850. was issued by Elbridge Green, Esq., Justice of the Peace, and was directed to Jonathan Cochran, Esq., both of whom have resided in town since that time. The inhabitants qualified to vote in elections and town affairs, were warned to assemble in Academy Hall, which stood upon land which now forms the north-east corner of Grove and Berwick Streets, near the railroad. Previ- ous to the year 1857, this building was removed to Main Street, and was known as Lyceum Hall, it was destroyed by fire in August, 1870.
The second town meeting was held in the vestry of the Protes- tant Methodist Church ; third and fourth meetings, in the Con- gregational Meeting House. During the years 1851, 1852, and 1853, twenty-six meetings were held in what was known as the Town Hall, this is supposed to have been the Academy Hall, before mentioned.
