SURFACE DRAINAGE.
In connection with the surface drainage I wish to call atten- tion to the condition of the streets.
Previous to the inauguration of surface drainage all manner of make shifts were resorted to for the disposal of the water. It was not a question as to where it ought to be collected but was a case of let it go where it could. Consequently in putting in catch basins it is usually necessary to more or less regrade the streets and unless this is done the drains fail in their purpose and the benefits derived are not nearly so great as might be were he highway appropriation large enough to admit of mka- ing?these changes.
In my report for 1934, on page 48, I recommended that the work be continued as fast as the act authorizing the same would permit, and that another appropriation of $2 ),000 be made for use in 19)5; in addition to this, in my request to the Mayor for appropriations in the annual budget, I again recommended the appropriation of $2 ),00), but for some reason the year 19)5 passed by and no appropriation was made for this purpose, and therefore as the only funds available for this work were the un- expended balance from 19)4, amounting to $12,322.92, together with the stock on hand February 1, 1905, amounting to $121.71, but little of the work recommended to be done was accomplish- ed, but considering the amount expended an unusually large number of catch-basins were built, namely 5).
Following are sketches showing the location of the work, a detailed statement of its cost by streets, value of all work con- structed to date, statement of receipts and expenditures, and stock account.

SIDEWALKS.
There are about 36 miles of paved sidewalks in the city, about 34 of which are of tar concrete and most of them are ten or more years old, and are laid upon an unsuitable foundation, consequently they are badly heaved and broken by the frost and nearly all of them need repairing, and in fact a great many need to be entirely rebuilt, and the money appropriated or avail- able for their care is not sufficient.
Contracts were made for supplying material and doing work as follows: Curbstone and brick, Robert Philpot; Concreting, T. Norris Company; Granolithic, Warren Brothers Co. and Simpson Brothers Corporation.

REPAIR OF PRESENT WALKS.
There was no specific appropriation made for sidewalk repairs, but instead the one for general maintenance of the highways was so worded in the Budget as to include any work done on repair- ing sidewalks, and under this authority there was expended the sum of $3303.37, for a detail of which see the report on highways.
NEW INDIVIDUAL WALKS.
These walks are constructed upon the application of any indi- vidual in front of premises owned by him, and practically of such material as he may designate. The following table shows the number, location, kind and cost to the abutter of all such walks laid in 1905.

CONTINUOUS WALKS.
The Board of Aldermen passed Order No. 2792 for a continu- ous concrete walk on the east and west sides of Orient Avenue; this, together with completing work ordered in 1904 (Order No. 2489 B.) for continuous curbing on the east and west sides of Main Street from Porter Street to the Wakefield line, consti- tuted all of the work of this nature done the past season. The work under both of these orders has been completed, and as provided by ordinance, assessments levied and committed to the Collector and Assessors as follows:
