Catholic Organizations-The march of the 39,000 men of the Holy Name Society at the Centenary celebration drew attention to the many organizations created by the Catholic Church for the furtherance of its works. The various school enterprises have been touched upon, and more concerning them has been written in the chapter on education.

THE RELIGIOUS ASPECT

So with the many philanthropies of the church in Boston, the names and some of their history can be found in the chapter on philanthropies. The magnitude of these and of the religious orders in the city is hardly realized by the general public. Both male and female orders are estab- lished apart from the regular clergy of the Catholic Church. The male orders are principally for missionary work and religious self culture ; those of the women are for charitable, benevolent and educational work, although the energies of both are spent in many other phases of activity.

Prominent among these orders are The Brothers of Charity, founded in Belgium in 1809, and chiefly devoted to works of charity and the edu- cation of youth ; the Franciscans, of which but few are resident in Bos- ton; the Jesuits, probably the best represented in the city, several of the largest churches of the faith in Boston being in their charge, as is Boston College. Holy Cross College, in Worcester, was established by the Society of Jesus, and Boston College dates from a decade later. St. John's Seminary, the local training school for the future priests in the See, was conducted by certain priests from the congregation of St. Sulpice, Paris. The Jesuits entered this country as early as 1565 (in Florida) and while Boston was being founded, penetrated and explored immense sections of America. The Redemptorists, or Priests of the Congregation of the "Most High Redeemer" have been located in several of the city churches.

Of the women's orders the more notable are, The Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, who are serving in Boston the poor, the sick, the orphan and foundling, and the unfortunate women. They have charge of or assist in the St. Vincent's Orphan Home, the Home for Destitute Catholic Children, the Carney Hospital and others. The Sis- ters first visited Boston in 1832, only three in number; since then there have been continued accessions until there are more than seventy-five busy with their charities. The Sisters of Notre Dame, introduced in America in 1840, devote themselves to the education of the young. They are the more numerous of the women orders, serving as teachers in very many of the educational institutions of the Catholics in the city. The greater share of the sodalities, both for the unmarried and the wedded women connected with the church, are in charge of this sisterhood. The Convent of Notre Dame, in the Fen Park district is one of the choicest of the buildings that ornament that part of the "Hub." The Franciscan Sisters, engage in hospital activities in a few of the Catholic charitable institutions. The Ladies of the Sacred Heart are of the cloistered orders, although not confined to any one house. They are consecrated to the edu- cation of young women, particularly the gratuitous instruction of the poor. They came to Boston in 1880.

The Catholic Churches in Boston are altogether too numerous to

have the histories told of their foundation and careers. With the ex- ception of the Jewish synagogues, no denomination now builds places of worship more frequently than the Catholics. In actual number of parishes, there are nearly double the total of Roman churches than of any other single faith. The beginnings of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross have already been given, and the church described earlier in this chapter. This parish was the first in the city and always the leader. There was no increase in the number of churches until nearly two decades had passed of the last century, but after this chapels became fairly numerous, and, starting in 1841, there began a period of expan- sion which has continued ever since; the average being about two churches every three years for the eighty-five years. The multiplica- tion of parishes in what is known as the "Metropolitan District," has been double that of Boston proper. A directory of the Catholic churches in the city with their locations and priests is appended to this chapter. The following is a fairly complete record of the dates of the establish- ment of the various parishes with the name of the founder included :
